The rest of the 250s are poo now that LAMS exists, far better bikes can be had for much less coin.
Iunno man. You'd find a way to make it fucking ugly I have faith! Although I will admit, Geoff is one of the best looking ....... well its not a gn250 anymore is it?

Your 600 is still the ugliest thing I've ever seen.

Anyway, the new 250s are absolutely poo. The new ninja300 would be great if it wasn't as expensive as it is. Sign of the times I guess.

I'm looking for a first bike as well. I have $2000-$2200 to spend on it, excluding shit like insurance, rego, gear etc. I've looked on Trademe and I've seen some possibilities that have looked really good, but I'm not too keen on buying sight unseen although I don't really know what to look for when going to view/testride. I asked my cousin who is a very experienced motorcyclist to help me out and he refused. Apparently, he would feel responsible if I had an accident, although, I think I am capable of making my own decisions about my life and I would have thought he'd want to help me find a safe vehicle. The fact that there seem to be no decent bikes in the Wellington area in my budget range frustrates things.

GDOBSSOR (and Mystik), you could also look at getting a shop to give it a once over. I wouldn't guarantee their lookover as such, but at least it's something to start with.

GDOBSSOR, you could also spin it around on him that he could help you avoid getting a bad one...

    So the DR is out...

The GS, though a great bike, really is just a little out of my budget (I really only have $5,000)

So I have emailed the guy with the Ninja that's also on here. It's says on here that it will be sold warranted and that the tyre will be fitted when it goes in for a service so basically I am just confirming that. I have also asked if he can get the mechanics to give it a pre-purchase check when they warrant it. I think that if it is all ok, it will be a good buy and is well in my budget.

Thanks alot for all of your help and advice guys!

Had a close look at those bikes, and it looks as shit as the Chinese stuff. You're better off with a Hyosung.

As for the back up service, I laughed aswell. They are useless!

Have you tried this GS http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/moto...-522582665.htm ? they might take 5 for it. Slightly older ones in good condition do come up on trademe quite regularly for $2500 - $3000 if you can wait.

Yamaha FZX250 Zeal - Powerful (for a 250 with 40ish hp), comfortable (great seat and sitting posture, unless you want the 'draped over the tank' style), excellent brakes, looks and easy to handle. Some of them going for about $2k...

Apparently, I need to 'consult' my parents and involve them in the decision. For fuck's sake, I'm 20, not fifteen. I'm done with 'caring' people who think they know everything telling me what I should and shouldn't be doing.

Good idea, I might get that done with an FXR150 I'm looking at. How much is a pre-purchase check?

Easy now, that's the first step towards making a rash and unhealthy decision(s)... If you display patience and maturity, that will turn them around. The more you display, the less they have to say (eventually). Shooting off will only make them think you will ride the way you talk...
