    Engine case cleaning?

Anyone have any experience on how to clean engine cases that are clay stained?

buy one of those little sand blasters and put baking soda through it instead of sand or garnet, best thing is the baking soda dissolves in water.

Autosol ... or any cutting/grinding paste or formula ... the coarseness depending on end finish required.

its abit hard using stuff like that due to the rough sand casting, a scotchbrite and some petrol works not too bad too

Never heard of this before being used this way, what sort of results would you get doing this to remove flaky paint on an older engine for refurbishing reasons.
Before and after pics showing results would be good, bit i realize thats a big ask

Try oven cleaner and a stiff brush. It is bit caustic. Far more kick to it than mag wheel cleaner

I always put a couple of capfulls of household bleach in hot water and wash by hand to finish of with as the water blaster or hose never gets rid of the clay stains. Seems to work well for me.

Oven cleaner is one way. Just be mindful to limit the exposure time and rinse well...

Concrete cleaner is another approach, same deal as above.

Then that just leaves AluBrite or MetalBrite, but in essence the main ingredient is an acid just like in concrete cleaner.

Oh, and I don't need to point out you best wear PVC gloves when handling/using any of the above?

There are times when a good spray with degreaser left on overnight is really all that is needed

No need to point that out as you say since we're all safety plus. I always wear gloves, eye protection and take care not to inhale fumes when I'm cleaning the oven.

Actually that's bullshit. One of the joys of owning your own home is never having to clean the oven for letting agent house inspecion

To avoid this me and my old flatmates once broke into the recently unoccupied (and thus properly cleaned) flat downstairs and swapped ovens.
