No idea about what you've asked, but are we related? I seem to have a similar name to yours.

...did a whirlwind tour of the SI about 25 years ago for my bro -in-law from the UK,who had only a couple of days up his sleeve...Hillman Avenger, 1600...had good tyres when we left Lyttelton, down to the wires when we got back a couple of days later...no record but it was fucking quick and probably a waste of time as far as a tour goes...we had a laugh tho...

Google maps is awfully detailed about routes and distances, even times!

Use Apple Maps for the Magical Mystery Tour.

The Rusty Nuts Southern Cross ride isn't a true round NZ ride but the year I did it(2005), we left Bluff at mid-day, had to check in at Cape Reinga lighthouse car park at mid-day 3 days later, at East Cape lighthouse car park the next mid-day and Cape Egmont lighthouse car park the following mid-day, making 5 days in total. It was right on the edge of winter too with snow on the hills down south. You could use any route you liked between the checkpoints and each checkpoint was open for an hour. I think the total distance was close to 4000km.

The fast stuff (of which I've heard of a few) are never official, nor would they be legal, so never published..

For interest, I did this last year as part of a trip, 25.5 hours (about 1850km), but it's not the recommended way to view the gorgeous scenery on offer...

Stupid map embed thing doesn't seem to want to play... click here: http://goo.gl/maps/bJFMK

Dunno about records, but the old man did Wellington - New Plymouth in 4 hrs flat in 1938 on his Ariel Red Hunter 500. Roads weren't as good then, either and the Ngaraunga gorge was a....gorge. Highlights included being chased by the local Otaki cop, Roly somebody..(they all seemed to know the traffic cops by name), on his Scott, and ducking to avoid a horse and cart pulling on to the road and going under it's neck at 80mph!...................

    What fun.....

A book was written about a TV program that featured the entire length of state highway one. The author and program presenter ... made a statement that the full length of highway one (staying on the highway for it's entire length) could NOT be completed in any 24 hour period.

I know of two persons that HAVE completed said journey within the 24 hour limit.

I only know of one. The other one missed by 20 minutes after being followed by MoT for most of the way through Otago on his RE5.

However i don't think that trip could be done now as safe air no longer fly those old bristol freighters across cook straight cutting 4 hours off the ferry time between Wellington and Blenheim.

Oh, the one who succedded was on a GT750K

Is Queenstown to Dunedin in two and a half hours any good?

    Not me, obviously. A 'friend'.

I know of 2 RE5s in Otago Geoff, but back in 1975 there were 3. However I never said the RE5 Rider was from Otago, although he might have lived there at the time.
