Help required...

G'day...

for some reason today my bike is heating up when idling and still ALOT quicker than normal and also when i put on the choke it seems to be taking fuel away from the engine (slowly puts out the more i put it on) anybody have anyone know what could cause this?

I assume it has a full radiator?

The choke thing requires a bigger explanation...

Aaron - Use the choke when the bike is either hard to start or its a cold morning... It will use more gas up when using the choke for those few minutes, than if you start the bike up normally... after a few minutes turn the choke off... and the bike will run as it should.

Maybe your bike doesn't need the choke on everytime.

I have only used the choke on my bike twice in 5 years.
Now it cant be used cos somehow the cable broke inside..
so now its disconnected.

As to it runing hot when its idling.. sorry I have no idea.
But how long do you leave it idling for???????

Aaron - Using the choke when the bike is either hard to start or its a cold morning... will use more gas up than if you start the bike up normally... after a few minutes turn the choke off... and the bike will run as it should.

yea i guess she's just old (89)... what i meant to say was that normally even say mid afternoon if i just start 'er up it will idle for a bit then konk out. unless i leave the choke on for a few moments untill im on my way after about 5 mins of riding it normally idles fine (with the choke off) i'll sit on it for a couple of days just to see if i haven't jumped the gun here..

Maybe ambient temp is low at the moment, so it needs a richer mixture - more choke.

That's quite normal behaviour (even if your bike didn't used to be like that). Regardless of the ambient (outside) temperature, until your engine is hot, it needs a rich mixture to obtain combustion.

My bike (EFI) runs with fast idle and enriched mixture when starting it and for the fist few minutes, even if it's been only a few hours since I rode it, and it has a 16-bit computer to decide whether it needs choke or not.

As for the "getting hot when idling" thing, that's normal too, unless (as it sounds like) it's heating up quicker than normal. If you leave your bike idling, it's not getting any cooling air flow, the waterpump isn't spinning very fast, and after a few minutes of sitting it will reach the temperature where the fan comes on. Mine does that even riding along in traffic, as did my last three bikes.
