Does anyone have any theories on why the BMW GS 1200 fuel strips fail?

I have a 2008 GS 1200 17000kms and the fuel gauge stopped working after I ran the bike very low on fuel? 20 km to go. Parked it up for the night next day no gauge
Got bike booked in for new fuel strip friday but I,m wondering if something triggers this problem or is it just poor german technology.
Reasons I have read so far
don’t run bike low on fuel ??? which I have done but not out !
don,t run bike on ethanol fuel??? Which I have been
take out the fuel funnel so you only full bike with bowser nossil flowing away from the fuel strip
I know this is a common problem I just hoping for some feed back on how to avoid this happening again due to it been a $500-$600 fix

From what ive read its all in the calibration of said fuel strip,had a read on an American forum where a bloke posted up that after having 3 fail in short time it was finally sorted with correct calibration.Cant help with anymore really,as i say just what i read.It sure does seem to be a problem for many though it seems,a lot of guys simply posted "forget it and use the trip meter".

Given that sometime around 2010-2012 BMW went back to floats, it's clearly a problem, but no, haven't seen a fix other than replacing.

I've run my 2010 GSA down to 8km left on the ranging, with no adverse effect. Run it several times down below 20km left as well. Has 61k on it now.
