With some of the new laws that have been put in place I have read that you can no longer do a defensive driving course to drop the time of your restricted from 18 to 12 months, can anyone verify this for me? I have also been reading about "Competency based training and assessment course's" from what I can gather these will replace the defensive driving courses and take a more practical approach which sounds good but if this is the case can any one tell me when they will come into effect or if they already have, how I could get my self involved in such a course?

    Id appreciate any help,

    Cheers.
Tricia1000 seems to be in the know with this. Last I heard if I recall correctly was you are right and the new "Competency based training and assessment course's" are in the process of being developed. So for now (unless you completed a DD course BEFORE October 1, you have to wait it out until the courses have been developed and implemented. I recall the approximate date being mid to late 2013.

I'm sure though that once you complete the course that gives you your full licence as well. So depending when you got your restricted you might be able to do the course and get your full 6 months early anyway.

As I understood it ... the DD course reduction was removed October 1st. Regardless of if you completed it prior to that date. And regardless of any promises/statements previously made on the LTSA sites.

As the Competency courses are not yet fully developed/approved ... it would be unwise to predict/state the amount of reduction of restricted license time such a course would get you.

More likely ... it will merely be ... a requirement before your full license test.

    Read about it at: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/ru...t-2011-qa.html
Basically 6 months on Learners, 18 months on Restrictd, regardless of age. This can be shortened to 12 months by completing a CBTA (Compulsory Basic Training Assessment), then full licence test. However, from 1st October, you will be able to ride a larger than 250 cc bike.
Plus, the Restricted licence test is going to become a whole lot harder, and will be an hour long, as opposed to the current 20 minutes.

Get on with getting your licence now, before the changes. FIND OUT WHAT TRAINING CAN DO FOR YOU...WHILST IT IS STILL YOUR OWN IDEA!!!!!!!
I am running another slow skills workshop, for males and females, this Saturday hopefully. $50 for two hours, and the rest picked up by ACC.
You need to have a class 6 licence, and your own bike.

Also available, using the ACC subsidy, is pre-test lessons, Advanced lessons, new bike familiarisation, and any other areas that you wish to cover. If you have an idea for a course, then please let me know, and I will put one together......

From January, but I think the reduction to 12 months is still there.

Indeed ... it WAS January that was posted ... and was based on statements made on the LTSA sites.

But as yet ... NO competency test has been approved, so NO reduction in time can happen until it (the course contents) does get approved.

In principal (read legislation) the course will shorten the time ... all that is needed ... is the appropriate authority to approve a set specified course. And it will have to be one that cannot vary throughout the entire country ... by all course providers. ...

I've already talked to the NZTA about it. IF you did your DD course BEFORE October 1st, you can apply and they will reduce your time on R from 18 to 12 months. That's only valid if the DD course was completed in full before the 1st of October.

If you haven't done the DD, then there's currently no course you can take to reduce the time on your R. There is a competancy thing coming up at some stage, but nothing concrete and not for awhile.

    Irony.

We all grizzle about how easy it is to get a licence (remember all those Weetbix packet comments?) and then when it gets harder we set about trying to exploit the ways to get around the tougher process.

Good luck having that document enforced. It was an early version, and not enforceable.

    Donuts.

I too had similar thoughts but really what the bitching is is being lied to and being caught between the changes. Before they could take a course to learn shit that would shorten it, in the future there will be a course to learn shit to shorten it. They were promised no one would be disadvantaged and now they discover that no matter how good they are or what courses they do they are caught in the middle by a bunch of twats.

I said the same thing on a thread just like this a while ago. I made the mistake of using the OP as an example with my usual tactful language and terminology.

Oh how the flaming ensued...till the op ended up agreeing with me. Weird.

At first I was a bit annoyed about the 18 month thing, but really the LAMS bikes offer a great selection and there are plenty of grunty bikes available for learners through to intermediate riders.

im in my later 40s bracket

i got my bike license when i was 15 bit of a jaunt around with a motorcycle cop following me asked a few questions and in 6mths could ride what i wanted
however i started with a small bike and over the years upgraded to a larger or smaller bike depending what type of riding i was doing
but it all comes down to one thing --experience --and in my mind getting a new bike license and rushing to get a bigger one is fraught with problems
