    Parking ticket

I got a parking ticket on Friday evening on Fort St in Auckland CBD. There's a small area allocated to motorcycle/scooter parking there and it is getting fuller and fuller with summer rolling along.

Went to Mt Eden for lunch during my break at 2pm, came back at 3pm and saw that it was completely full, so I parked next to the sign, making sure to not block anything.

Didn't notice it until Saturday morning taking the bike out that I had something tied to my handlebar. Was a $40 ticket for parking in a prohibited area. Has measurements for how far I was out, apparently 30 (doesn't give a measurement, but presumably cm) for my front wheel, 70 for my rear.

Would I have a claim for contesting this? I tried to punch in the website address they give on the ticket for contesting it but it doesn't work, and the page says it was last reviewed in 2010..

In a clear cut world, I realise I was in the wrong. I didn't park between the signs, fine. But 30-70cm away from it, and a ticket? At 3.15 on a Friday? Really?

Choices choices choices. Now best to be a bastard that is the question.

Why presume cm, mm or m is more correct in technical measurements but then again it could be nm or um and is that from the outside or inside of the line.

They have to put the right details on the ticket and as they haven't stated the units of measurement it is invalid on a technicality.

Same as you have to follow the rules so do they.

You are a Fuck wit for knowingly not obeying the clearly stated rules and deserve anything you get and more.

    Did I miss any?

Write to the address on the notice explaining what happened, your complete side of the story and ask for the ticket to be waived.

Don't get nasty or vindicative and make any derogatory comments, just stick to your story and see what happens.

I imagine that there will be many of KB that will advise you to fight the ticket, tell them nothing, go to Court and you never have to pay them...But remember you are the person responsible not all the keyboard hero's on here.

Yea I knowingly disobeyed the rules but only because the allotted parking area was full and I didn't see a huge problem with parking next to the sign where I was not blocking or inhibiting anyone/anything.

Might give the ambiguous listed measurements a try though, cheers.

ahhh you see you didnt see the huge problem until they taped it to you handlebars. If the parking is full.....it means that its full. ie, it cant take any more bikes legally parked. So the choice then is to find somewhere else to park .....orrrrrr......illegally park and take the risk of a ticket... which was your choice and in this instance you chose wrong. Pay the ticket.

But the ticket isn't right so using the same logic they don't get their money.

Stage a Hikoi to their offices and put up a tent right outside their front door and live in it until they agree to waive the ticket.

Or just do what red mermaid suggested.

If the ticket didn't specify the measurement unit, maybe you can try paying them with money that doesn't have dollar symbol on it

I wasn't aware of a set tolerance ... for distance outside a parking area that you can park without getting a ticket.

A few threads have already been posted by people that have also parked "near" a parking area ... and received a ticket ....

A funny thing about parking areas ... you are either IN one ... or NOT. If you are not ... expect a ticket.
