I owned the XJ400 for 6 or 7 months. From what I was able to tell, basically the same machine, except the XJR is naked vs the Xj400 is half faired, and the XJR has (from what I've heard) really shitty ohlins suspension.
Can give you my experiences based on the assumption that they will behave largely the same. Shouldn't see why they wouldn't be.
The XJ400 was an OK bike. It's a very much the muchness bike. Definitely a UJM. The ride height is OK, the seating position is fairly neutral, bike isn't too heavy, it has a fairly average motor. Some OK pull from 4k RPM but it's pretty..... breathless is how I'd describe it. It's somewhat buzzy, and it's a thirsty bugger. Lookin at 30-35$ worth of petrol for 200$ riding it nicely. It was a really really bland motor. The Hornet 250 I've got now is better in pretty much every way.
It was a fairly comfortable bike. The suspension was super undersprung as they're all Jap market only bikes, so if you weight more then say 50-60KG it'll be soft.
All in all, if you're just learning to ride or just want something to commute on, it's a fairly decent bike. Mine developed an odd fueling issue I was never able to really sort out, but from what I've heard they're fairly reliable bikes. Mine was certainly easy to work on. It won't scare you or do anything nasty. It's certainly a good bike to learn on or whatever.
Might do it for you, but I found it a pretty uninspiring bike. Definitely wasn't sad to see it go. Love the hornet I've got now 10x more.
Great bikes equivalent looks-wise to the Hornets, great fuel capacity & apparently economy too [31kms/litre at 60kph according to one spec sheet], good build quality, comfortable and good for a learner (it's LAMS approved) BUT all depends on your budget, on its history, condition and age.
With most Yamahas, the front brakes and suspension are the weaknesses. Test these out, and if they are OK and everything else is good, you have a winner.
