how old are you?

.. All my hopes to stay ahead rest on my youngest grandson, 4yrs old, and me riding for another 12yrs. That would make me 78. Possible, but unlikely. Pm me in 2018 for an update. A guy I looked up to a long time ago was Sir Ralph Richardson, the Brit actor. He turned up for a world premier of a film on a new BMW. He was 82. Always hoped I could beat him. Surprising how biking runs in families though. I read the Brit bike mags and see the same names as I saw in the 60s. Another guy, Tony Moss competed in five classes at the IOM TT. Best placing. 21st Finished in all races. Age. 64. Only been racing four years. Now why can't I do that??? No regrets about getting old. Retirement means I can pick the days when I want to ride. No waiting for rainy weekends, if the sun's shining I'm riding. Life's good.

Why on earth should it be unlikely ? I most certainly intend to be riding at 78.(God willing, to b sure, but He knows that I'm his only supply of custard squares, so I reckon I've got him over a barrel) . And if Sir Ralph gave up at 82 he was a wuss.

Calmone, did you know a MOT traffic Cop in Petone named Bob Tutt (Deceased). I think I owe him a vote of thanks. After a very eventful day of chase around Petone, Wngtn and back a few times, he caught me trying to hide my bike in the Buick Street toilets. He made me ride it home slowly while he followed close behind. when I got home he made me pull the head and wheels off it and told me if he ever saw me on it again he would throw the book at me. His advice was to sell it and go away. I was very pissed that day. I sold the bike and signed on to a ship and left the country. I think now that he did me a big favour and that he was a great guy. I stayed at sea for the next 4 years. The poor old Cops can't do things like that today. I had a fair few belts around the ears and kicks up the arse from coppers back in those days. Didn't hurt, they cant do it in this PC world today. Mores the pity too. Cheers John.

Ah, now that's probably the real age distinguisher. Between those who have heard (and smelled) the night-cart, and those who have no idea what it was.

I never saw the night carts in Upper Hutt but only missed them by a few years. A mates older brother told me how once they removed a pin that held on one of the carts wheels. Apparently it was pretty messy when the cart rounded Cloustons Corner. (for UH people, thats the corner where MacD's is. Blockbuster video building was once Cloustons garage. All that shit on the road then - having MacDs there now seems appropriate
However I do remember steam locos hauling the suburban trains, and rode between Wallaceville and Upper Hutton one of the first electric units. So yeah, fairly oldish.

How many of you travelled over the Rimatakas by train or railcar before the tunnel went in. some of my olds used to drive the trains and work in the refreshment rooms etc at X creek, way back. Been there done that. Going through the tunnels up hill in the train on a hot day was murder. Alright in the railcar. My father was a driver. History now, long gone. I served my time as a Fitter at Woburn Railway workshops, 1955/60 left NZ Feb 61. I had just turned 21. Cheers John.

Also there is a restored Fell loco and lots of memorabilia of the line at Featherston. The railcars wouldn't have gone over the hill, it was too steep for anything except the Fells. The incline is now a nice walk / bicycle track, and a real monument to what was accomplished with pick and shovel. (Nowdays they need earthmovers just to put in a driveway)
