The cops wore a plastic sort of half helmet back then...a mate of mine got one and painted it flat black. We were coming out of a pub one night on a '54 T'Bird and I was pillion with a crate on my knees, and a cop stopped us....the only thing he could find wrong was my mates helmet, flat black helmets were illegal back then. He had to back down when it was shown it was exactly the same as what he was wearing.

I sort of remember a thing about Matt black helmets being illegal

Had to have a percentage of a different colour on them,so you just painted it black then kicked it around the car park for a bit.

Then if the MOT gave you grief you just said "fuck off mate" it's black an white

So pray tell us all. If it was 'illegal' to wear a 'flat black' helmet why did the cop back down ? Forget your crap about being the same helmet he was wearing.

There was no strutting around in leather and looking heavy...it was just hooligans on bikes.

Probably because it was a piss weak law that never stood up in court anyway.

The helmet the cop was wearing was a plastic "Polstar" that had a proven reputation for breaking into three pieces along it's seams if it did hit the road with any force.

    Happy now ?

Outside 246, that's where it all happened.

Yeah, it was the shitty plastic Polstar. A flat black helmet wasn't illegal, but part of the protest thing was to using any sort of helmet you could find and paint it black, making a joke out of the whole thing - so soon as he saw the matt black Polstar he knew something was wrong, but just didn't know how wrong it was.

1971. Big anti Vietnam war protest march up Queen Street. Hells Angels outside 246 punching protesters and smashing up their signs.

After the march there was a mardi gras with bands playing at several locations along the street. I found out years later that it was supposed to be a party to honour our returned soldiers. At the time I was just a naive 15 year old who caught the bus to town because thats what you did on a Friday night in those days.

I rember it well. Kissed my first girl, an older hippie chic, under a tree in Albert park. She said "Make love to me" and I thought "What the hell do you think I'm doing" and kissed her harder!
