Over the years I've helped out organize a few things and what kills it for most organizers are the free thinking charmers who decide you cant shut the bar now, I dont need to go to bed, my bike needs a tune up at 4am, wadda ya mean I can't have a meal?(when it says MUST BE PRE ORDERED), fuck the neighbors, fuck the Police, etc etc etc.. It just wears ya down...

Best events I've gone to were organized privately by strong individuals and if you didn't like the way they were doing it you were refunded your fee and escorted off the site then and there and you were black listed forever...

One of the fundamental changes in the nature of an event like this is drinking RTDs.

The alcohol intake is dramatically increased over the old days of drinking beer (4% alcohol per volume for basic beer like Lion Red of Speights, 7 - 9 % ABV for RTDs). The behaviour is very different as a result. Another change is the authorities' insistence that organisers take more responsibility for safety at the events. Add these things together and you have a recipy for someone's balls being on the line.

A third change is that people have less and less available social time - with weekend work and families needing dual incomes. That has reduced the amount of time people are prepared to "give" to events as volunteer workers. People who provide services at events want to be paid, otherwise they would just as soon stay home with the family or enjoy some recreation of their own. Can't blame them for that.

These changes to the fabric of NZ life have had more impact than PC councils etc (although they all play a part.)

I had a role helping the organisers of a big event for about 5 years. It was incredibly successful and well known. But all the things I've mentioned above became more and more of an issue. The 8 pallets of beer that was drunk changed to 5 of beer and 3 of RTDs - effectively doubling the amount of alcohol consumed.

The event owners were incredibly nervous about the court case involving that person killed in a cycle race - in the end the courts found the organisers of the race were not liable for the death of the cyclist but, if you'll remember, events were being cancelled all over the place while the case was heard. People were simply not prepared to take on the risk.

The owners of the event I worked at prepared the event management plan (something that was newly required) and it focused their thinking when everything was down in black and white. On paper. When they added up the cost of the infrastructure, return on investment and the likely potential of them being hung by their balls if someone died, especially if alcohol was involved, they decided it was no longer worth it. Big annual event, drawing about 3000 punters, was no more.

It's a heck of a shame, but that's the way it goes - some long-standing events will stand up to these fundamental changes, others will not.

There's always a way arond those things, the Vincent for example has undergone a shit-load of change (mainly got WAY bigger!) since I first went there (about '93 or so) but still manages to keep going.

But 'people' are noticing, hence the booze-bus staking out the rally the next morning, the paid security guys, requirements for 'qualified' people putting up marquees over a certain size etc.

Rally organisers will have to adapt, be flexible - or the rally will die.
