Eeeeer sorry to widdle on your rant,,,,, but isnt there a published book about a couple of Kiwi's who did 'similar' on two Panther 600/650 singles?? at a minimum 15yrs if not 20-25yrs older than the Hardly Ridable.

I've ridden one of those AMF sporty's..... All credit to the guy, they truly were/are horrid pieces of equipment to ride.

It was his mate Paul that came here a few weeks ago looking for help with his Generator.

I enjoyed his comments about some of the views here and how some of us might take them for granted,,,then he shows pic's of his bike at Orere point right where I launch my Kayak to go fishing every few weeks.

I can relate to the kid doing a NZ tour on a "classic"...Did a round trip on a 71 trident when I was about his age...and it sure as hell didn't hold up as well as his Old harley did (The exhaust coming off brought back memorys lol....mine was the muffler flying off and cart wheeling into a feild...took bloody ages to find)

Loved the photos!, sounds like he really loved NZ

Its the best way for a new rider to tour IMHO...an old bike, bugger all gear and no fixed plans ...always leeds to an adventure.


...soo jealous!...wanna pack the bike and go touring again now (altho I am about to head south for a week long trip soon....2 days fishing with a mate "requires" a whole week off for exploring and riding ...why wouldn't ya )

...dont want to piss on anyone's parade, and getting out there and doing it as opposed to wishing you could is one of the bigger things you can do with your life....but check out a couple of tales of intrepid that were done, albeit on four wheels..Turn Left, The Riffs Have Risen and Husky Be My Guide...makes our modern concept of roughing it, pale a little...good on them though for doing something other than talk...

I think the point is, that this young fella, like many do at his age decided to do his OE on a motor bike, peculiarly a bike that has had serious shit tossed at it as being a horrible bike by many bikers world wide.
And yet, here it is In NZ! and with photgrapic evidence of it traveling here via the American plains, the Rockies, surviving transportation to auzzie, then here to NZ and has taken its young rider to bluff! And despite things failing, is still doing it!
OK all you bashes, show us a 37 year old bike of any sort that TODAY would be able to do the same thing.......

The Kid has true biker grit and determination...how many of us could even attempt this around the world, with just the clothes on our back and a old bike........One in 10.....20.....30....or maybe 10 on the whole kiwi biker site!

I know I would never be able to do it...But I respect both the bike and the rider in the blog.

its got nothing to to do with the bike...i mean the bike could be like grand pa's axe....
