Sad news.....It is a holiday here, AKL Anniversary includes Waikato...
More information will be forthcoming I presume, local rag....
One of the main reasons NOT to ride there in the weekends.....Vehicles, trail bikes and headons...
Wasn't a fall off the edge or...

Funny, no siren went off in town? Fire Service not required obviously.

Stunning day here, Thompsons Track would have been full of Bikes, Quads and families in 4WD....
I always see them stopped here in town, fuelling up or at the cafe afterwards....
Dino will vouch, there are always some Yahoos up there tearing it up and treating it like a motocross track esp on the corners...and families with young kids riding on the back of quads..No helmets zone as well.....It is a bit dangerous up there on weekends/holidays...

Perhaps this should be in the off road section to highlight the idiots that go up there?
It would also be interesting to get some perspective of off road users that frequent it......

Did a few trips over there a few times quite a few years ago, mostly in 4x4s, but a couple of times on dirtbikes or quads. quite a few close calls with guys going hell for leather not really thinking there may be other users about.

They got the air ambulance in, a normal ambulance, several cop cars and a hearse i do believe... Closed the road while the crash unit were there... they all left the scene a couple of hours ago. Usually when the air ambulance goes over my house it on its way to kati kati area, but landed up the road towards the track

There were about half a dozen ute loads of bikes that i could see(live down by X roads) so was getting used.
Built for speed, not for comfort

I know the Volunteer Firemen who had to go in and bring his body out- he and his mates had all had an absolute skin full. Im sorry for his family - but I have no pity for the idiot himself or his stupid pisshead mates at all.

When we ride up there we do all we can to keep ourselves and anyone else safe. It is a remote and dangerous place.

I read in the paper today about the absolute idiot in Hawkes Bay who crashed the quad bike and badly injured his 6 year daughter. He's been charged with drink and drugs offences as well as reckless driving.
