I did this with Aslan, he on a DR650, me with the DR750.
Entrance off the road was the hardest bit to find, winds up a driveway then skirts around a house, there the track begins. I recall a unlocked gate is all and it was a nice climb to the summit. Loose scree, small rocks and a few ruts. The view from the top was bloody awesome!
Of course the South Islanders and others will enlighten you, but today is great weather, so their either out riding or protesting up at Waitangi

If theres ANY real wind in the valley.. there can/will be gale force wind on the summit..
I have had to ride hanging of the side of the bike & could only just keep it up right..
ride the side of the road closest to the on comeing wind as you are going to get
blowen side ways.. yer don't want to be blowen off the road...
Altmarloch turn off ... though the first gate after you hit the first section
of gravel comeing from the blenheim end... wouldn't be 50m of gravel..
the road looks like a private drive way....

but a carm day it's a great ride....

Ride up Mt Patriach as well if you have time, its a much more interesting ride ......but Altimarloch gets more points for the view , on a clear day it has probably the biggest panorama you can ride to in NZ.

I was pretty imprrresssed wth the view up Mt Patriarch the other day. I would rate the ride in as one of the best around - it had everything except mud, water crossings & traffic
