No, the census is not anonymous, and its not even particularly private.

You have to put your full name and date of birth on it.

The data is released in mesh block format, of groups of as little as 100 individuals. So its easily compared with other publicly available data like your driver licence, vehicle registration, rates database, electoral roll and NZ Posts inhabitants list to reconnect "anonymous" data with the actual individual.

And the data is only protected by the statistics act. So the government can simply make it available any time it wishes.

I had a spell in a hospital once. The admission form asked about religion. I put "pantheist"...

One of the nurses came in a few days after and asked..."I see you said you are a pantheist. What is that if you don't mind my asking?"

I said "Oh we worship nature and the life force - that sort of thing. It's a bit like old fashioned paganism y'know - fertility rites, midnight meeting on hilltops for naked frolics - pretty cool really!"

Her eyes kinda bulged out and she took off out the door. Never did see that nurse again...

The Christchurch Wizard used to "disappear" at census time.I think they nailed his arse in the end as well.

Jack used to go passed the 12-mile limit - so technically he was not in New Zealand ..

For several censi now I have just answered the questions I want to answer (bugger all) and scrawl "intrusive' across the rest of the form ... I've never had a censor even come back to query me ... let alone get prosecuted.

Same again this tie round - though this year I might get a big stamp made up so I can stamp "intrusive" all over the form.

Christianity is a religion - Baptist, Anglican, Catholic etc are sects.
