What about newbie’s visiting KB looking to get into biking even after their parents telling them it’s too dangerous, and the first thing they look at is a page of dead bikers.

Its the reality of biking. People die, just because we are a biking group, theres nothing wrong with us honoring our members that have gone. And it might be good for us too, put our feet back on the ground and gently remind us that we are not bullet proof and immortal.

It wouldn't have to be the main page...

yep - it's a reality, and anyone who can't handle the fact shouldn't be riding IMHO
i think it's a good idea, i'd like to think we respected each other enough to honour our fallen friends.

    Not first thing... no.
    • A page where we show respect for them yes.
    • A page which is moderated yes
    • A page where their enjoyment of motorcycling is remembered.

Look at Britten, his cause of death was linked to the manufacture of the dream he made a reality. I'll always remember him for his love of bikes and amasing talent - not the mistakes he made in handling carbon fibre.

Ayrton Senna - Died doing what he loved - the guy's still a legend and reference to him is generally one of respect etc.

So too with our friends and family the have died. As has been said I think we need to acknowledge the risks, injuries and deaths that are happening out there. Giving a dose of reality to newbies or "the invincibles" might not be such a bad thing.

That's exactly what happened to me riding home last night. I was alone in the bike and I got to reconsider my options. Father of 2 small kids, risky form of transport, vs my enjoyment and the freedom of motorcycling.

As an option for consideration - is it possible to somehow mark those that have died in the Memeber List? Maybe Bold and Italicise their names, or put some special background on their icon? Something respectful that will also make the situation plain.

That's why I think it should be somewhere discreet, maybe even only open to senior members (which doesn't take much to acheive).

    Jeeze.. Settle down folks..

I'll bet as many bikers are killer by old age or cigarettes as by having accidents...

Everytime I go for a ride I have a couple of mates along with me... Their names mean nothing to the rest of the world but everything to me, having hung on a virtual wall will not dimish or amplify what I personally feel.

The problem I see is that the internet is not a permanent place, eventually even this site will perish and do you really want to hang you memories on a wall like that?

What I would seriously suggest though is that on the members page - the names are preserved but with the comment 'retired' or summat next to them to prevent that persons KB nickname being re used...

    Cheers

Doesn't have to be just those killed on a bike. Sooner or later there'll be a KBer die of other causes - cage crash, sickness, old age , drowning. Its not an uncommon feature in clubs and such.

Bear in mind that the average age of KBers is quite high. Sooner or later the reaper catches up anyway.

Those who did die "in the saddle" could maybe be marked separately, as a sort of Roll of Honour.

Doesn't have to be a big drama, just a "We remember with affection our friends who are no longer with us".

I think its a good idea.

A duplication of the User Profile Pics with same changes is probably the best way. I'm currently working on the vB3.5 upgrade and will add it to the list of stuff to do for the upgrade.

The first thing I saw when I came onto the site was "Stonechucker down" and fighting for his life, didn't put me off, actually made me think WOW what a fantastic bunch of people who really care about each other.

Makes me ride that little more carefully.

If there is a link for each of these to the appropriate thread then if people want they can see the background to each person, need to close these threads off after a set time??

Ixion, I was about to say something similar. Sooner or later a few KB members will pass on through natural causes or some form of accident not involving bikes- they should be remembered too. Hell if you put 2500 people on a cruise ship, and pampered them and looked after them with the best possible care, sooner or later some of them will still pass on.

Like Raster, Stonechuckas event was soon after I joined...and it was great to read about it. I recently heard about flyin, and read the events surrounding his demise, and I was similarly reminded of a) my mortality and b) the group of like-minded individuals who both appreciate and love riding bikes, and c) how that group of individuals can pull together and respond quickly with emotion.

    That's pretty special.

With regards ot the internet being a temporary thing, I do agree in part. We know the other people on this site via the internet. What's the harm in sharing thoughts/feelings in this manner. Anything that you want to live on in posterity can be sent to the family/friends directly - or they could even print bits out. People who see photos may want to download them to their own hard drives etc. Then each individual is responsible for the memory-joggers and sentiments they wish to keep.

I think it's an appropriate way to say 'cheerio' and would like to be remembered in this manner.

On the members list page, I think changing the font so that they're white on a black background, or having a white cross (non-denominational - I'm thinking like the roadside cross) by their name or something.

I don't like the idea of a roll of honour (apologies to whomever suggested it). It's not honourable to die. It's just a fact of life. That the person died in the saddle (not technically) is irrelevant. Other members who pass through other things ought to be allowed to be treated in the same manner.

    we all love to ride.
and some will miss the ones that have left us behind.
and some would like to remember there life.
not how they passed away, but how they lived.
i would like to see a page, list, picture of the ones whom have passed.
even though i have not meet them. there is one thing i have in common.
    we all love to ride.

im against it. its a good idea and all but on some other biker forums with death wall its kind of turned to shit, like its a good idea, but as its an open forum anyone can say what they want an not everyone has the respect not to.
so you end up with the opposite of the nice ideas an stuff left behind for you an get people going on about what a dick you were an so on on a public forum..

i dont care about newbies coming on here an getting disuaded by the fact people die on bikes. its a FACT. if they will be put off by the risks then its a good thing.
