In last nights Manawatu Evening Standard there was an article about a man who had broken his ankle trying to do a wheelie on his motorcycle......
the end peice was quote[police had no sympathy for him]un quote

Well guess what plod i have no respect for your 180k trip for the pm to watch rugby.......i have no respect for the accusations the plod always seem to be having from woman.......
I have no respect for the tickets you give to the innocent.........
Well mr police man i have just lost all my respect for you

well... can you really blame them? It's like a fighter getting the shit kicked out of him... he decides to get into the ring and fight, so when he gets his nose broken does he deserve sympathy?

Why should the biker get some? Would be nice if he/she did... but it's not a "given".

*doesn't think it's fair to not respect cops because of that*

While I agree and respect your opinion regarding the pms trip....I dont know of one signal cop who EVER knowingly wrote a notice to "The innocent"

DONT LOSE YOUR RESPECT FOR THE THOUSANDS OF COPS OUT THERE who do an incredible job out there in trying to keep this country the great place that it is........if you want to loose your respect go to one of those countries where they have"the best Police Force money can buy!"

On a personal note I want to THANK the KBer cop who did so much ...way more than "the Job" at Old Farts crash last weekend and to ALL the KBers that have helped out in so many ways

I can see where you are coming from Ratus. There are degrees of wrongdoing. If we cock up a wheelie the last thing I would expect is sympathy BUT how evil was he? How many innocent people was he endangering- lets assume he had the brains to pick a clear road away from people and was only endangering himself. Others pack their half ton car with drunk mates speed down residential, high pedestian areas and slam into trees and vans on bridges killing en masse.

When we were in our teens/early twenties and pissing around on our bikes, we never had any sympathy for each other or ourselves if we were injured doing something "testosterone fueled" - like my mate doing doughnuts in the sand and hitting a rock with the back wheel (Instant High Side - Just Add Traction) or the time the same guy came onto my lawn too hot, hit the brakes too late as he tried to park between my bike and another mate's bike, wiped out on the grass, just missed hitting the other two bikes and wound up in mum's beloved garden - he was a helluva mess: seriously banged up his pride, put a large dent in his ego, biker-cred totally irreparable.

If we acted crazy and hurt ourselves - no sympathy. If we were trying to take a roundabout and hit some clapped-out cage's oil slick - all the sympathy in the world: bummer dude, bad break.

Binning while riding a bike sensibly and going about your normal business is lamentable, crapping off while pulling stunts - Stunts are fun, I've done a fair few myself and had a great time, but it's more "you pays your money and you takes your chances."

Sorry, but the function of a bike is not to pull wheelies and stoppies or do doughnuts on - sure, you can do them and they look cool and they are shit-loads of fun (well, stoppies look shit-loads of fun but I've never done one), but at the end of the day, they are not the primary function of the bike. You do them successfully, well and good; you screw up, you knew the risks beforehand.

I personally would not expect sympathy if I cocked up a wheelie and broke an ankle, I believe my words would be "Ah! It was my own damn stupid fault."

you can't expect to be popping wheelies and not get hurt at some stage (unless your real good)

Yep, I tend to agree with you here. I have absolutely nothing against wheelies and the like. However most riders realise that if something goes wrong then that's the risk they've taken . . . .

I've never had respect for traffic police anyway.........real cops, sure.
I'd never want sympathy from the police or anyone for that matter especially if I dropped it pulling a wheelie past some girls

Still as we all know "Speed Kills" but only if you hit something

Precisely - and I have no sympathy for people who do dumb things and get injured doing them! I had no sympathy for the burglar who cut himself breaking into someone's house either, but I was disgusted when he got ACC for it.

Did you REALLY expect the police to say "well, I know he was doing a wheelie but I feel sorry for him because he broke his ankle?" If he was doing it in his own driveway or on private property, perhaps I would have a smidgeon of sympathy for him. But if he was doing it on a public road, I think the police were very restrained if their only comment was that they had no sympathy for him.

I come from this area so I'd love to know who the twat was!

Do the Police have to make any comment of a personal nature at all?
They said a similar thing in a report about a driver who had two radar detectors stolen, he couldn't get a Police response even though he caught the last thieves in the act. A police spokesman queried why he needed a detector. While they are still legal it's none of their business. Still, you've got to wonder at a dummy who loses two. Slow learner?
Perhaps if they restricted their comments to "speed and alcohol were a factor"
all would be well.

I'm not going to defend the transgressions of some members of the Police. Even better, and more importantly, neither does the Police hierarchy. I celebrate the fact that while some members of our Police force are human and capable of doing wrong things, they are subject to the same laws as the rest of us, and the Police has no qualms in ensuring that wrongdoings are prosecuted in an appropriate manner.

Given that "respect" is something that should be earned, may I suggest you start saving. Get over yourself.
