problems with my FXR150

thanks frosty tried it last night. Dad connected the leads to my battery, taps the clips together and hey wow! no spark. connected them to the car battery and electric start worked, screen worked, lights stayed strong even while revving, everything perfect. I'll take note of that, don't buy a YUASA battery. I'll also try not to ride it until i get a new battery so i don't screw the ignition. I think the battery is busted, not dead, cause it never recharges, even after riding for an hour or more. thanks for everyone's help

you might want to have the bike checked out then. If the battery isn't being recharged during bike use, then you could have problems with the charge system, which means you'll go buy another battery now, only to have it die next week.. Go get the lot checked out, it'll be safer than bein sorry stuck up some mountain miles from home..

As for the battery, you don't have to pay over the top for one, but it is in the realm of 'you get what you pay for', so the cheap Taiwanese batteries, are just that..

FXR150s are cheap and Taiwanese, hence the cheap and Taiwanese battery.

FXR batteries are reputed as being good for fuck all, especially if the bike has sat for a period without use. They're also tiny, so finding another to fit is a nightmare. The charging system will most likely be fine though, they always are.

i read somewhere that theres a flaw in the design of FXRs. about 20cm or so back from the steering head theres a bunch of wires along the left that run into the frame with very little insulation around them. if you drop the bike or twist the bars a little too much they get crushed against the frame and wear through the insulation. the result is some popped fuses due to shorting.
wouldnt explain the starter motor, but might help....

Anybody heard of a battery called Dynacolt? I've got a YT-5L BS dynacolt battery in it. guy at the shop i just called said it sounds like a special drycell battery, expensive. can anybody confirm this? He also said that YUASA was the only battery they use in the motorcycle industry, and i was like huh? Should I get another battery the same, or a cheapy taiwanese thing for like $30?

You can get any battery you want provided it's the same physical size (seat rests on it), same voltage and has the same amp hour rating. Bring your old battery with you, makes it heaps easier to find a replacement. Many shops don't know what battery fits in an FXR but know the battery when they see it.

You'll find that those cheap $30 batteries will look very different.
Your battery is "sealed" and thus doesn't require it's acid level to be checked.
Those cheap batteries I think you're thinking about are not sealed units.

Because it's sealed and/or a low volume sold item, the shop might not have a unit sitting ready on the shelf for you. If this is the case, you'll have to come back the following day to collect it - happened to me.

Edit: Just had a quick look, my battery is: HI-VOLT YTX5L-BS 12V 4AH.

I have only ever had 1 warrenty issue with yuasa batterys. Have had operater and machine faults which caused batterys to fail many times. Don't bother fitting a cheap shit battery to your much loved bike.
