With the exception of the lights on the EXC what is the difference between these two bikes?
Is there also a XC-W? Is that available in NZ

Xc- w is the usa import, same bike as the exc here and in euorpe, xc is a step down from the sx softer susspension and milder moter, and a step up from the exc.
Exc full lighting and road rego compliant PDS non link rear end
XCW minimal lights NOT rego compliant linkage rear suspension
XC NO lights does have stator with lighting output, OFF road only linkage rear suspension
All 3 models use the same basic motor with different states of tune, ignition modules, pipe combos, carb settings etc
EXC- enduro cross country
XCW- cross country woods
XC - cross country
Hope this helps, XC designed for Hare Scrambles or GNCC racing eg what Paul Wibbley Races in the states. KTM have buit models to suit the East & West coast riders.
I was looking into the diffs between EXCs and XCs couple of years ago and diffs noted as above, plus also noticed different gearbox ratios. Can't remember if final drive/top gear was different each model (?). (ratios matter for a revbox 200 like mine, as top gear used a fair bit even at Sandpit)
Gear ratios probably don't matter much for 300 just thought I'd mention in case you wanted to look into it.
So for NZ trail riding it sounds as though the EXC would be the most suitable
You'll find the internal gear ratios do vary between models, usually 1st and 6th gear but only by 2-3 degrees.
Another variation is the size of the fuel tank , XC up 11 lt . EXC normally 9 lt.
Someone above said the xcw has linkage rear end. It does not. This bike as the exc uses pds. My last bike was a ktm 300 exc and now I ride a 2013 xc. In my opinion the exc is not an option. The xc does everything the exc does but better. The closed chamber forks are good enough reason along to buy the xc. If you really want to buy an exc get the blue version (husaberg) heaps better. Riding the husaberg 300 back to back with my old exc made me unhappy. Why do ktm put the crap parts on the exc? If you must have orange save up for the six days bike. Its worth the extra. Or do as I have and save some $$$ and get the xc. Its your money mate so up to you. Ps one xc coming up for sale soon. 2014 xc on order. Long live the stroker.
