    Question Rider training?

So this question was posed to me the other day, "what would it take to motivate you to seek further training?"

    So I throw it open to the KB sandpit;

    • Do you think you require or would benefit from further motorcycle training?
    • If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?
    • Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?

    • Yes
    • Emergancy braking, riding lines, hazzard identification, country roads, road bike on gravel/unenven surfaces as a starter
    • No, I tend to under-rate it

[*]Do you think you require or would benefit from further motorcycle training?

Require - NO .. wouid benefit from ?? Yes .. I've benefited from every course I've been on .. sometimes a lot . sometimes a little - but always beneficial.

[*]If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?
    I have no idea ... teach me something I don't know ...

[*]Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?[/LIST]
Yeah ... I do ... 39 years of riding and still alive ... I rarely freak myself out on the road any more (even if I freak out cage drivers and other riders) ... I haven't scared myself for at least two years ...

That tells me I ride within my ability - which is a lot higher than it used to be ...

On road, no. I think I would benefit from additional practice or observation and feedback from a suitable skilled an experienced observer. Coaching rather than training.
    • If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?
      Riding on gravel, adventure riding.
    • Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?
      Yes.

[*]Do you think you require or would benefit from further motorcycle training?
Require - not so much, but I would certainly benifit from more training/coaching.

[*]If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?
Heavy traffic practical training, hazard awareness and reaction training. Road surface transition mid corner i.e water, sand, gravel oil etc. Emergency braking with random objects around blind corners or thown in from the side to simulate the odd ball, child or animal. Mostly stuff you cant do by yourself or not safe to practice outside of a controled environment.

[*]Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?
    Reasonably.

As a returning rider I find training (be it professional or riding with more experienced riders) is always benefical. You learn something new everyday right? plus it's helping to boost my confidence, and learn in a controlled enviroment so I can be more prepared for 'real-world' situations.

If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?
Yeah, emergency braking is aways a good one (and by the looks of it a popular one), I'm re-learning old things but on a bigger and faster bike so correct cornering at speeds is something i'm working on.

Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?
alot of the time I'm underestimating myself, safer end of the scale if you ask me, but this can have it's downsides and risks.

Having ridden for over 40 years, I thought I was an "ok" rider but went along to the IAM nearly 2 years ago for an assessment against the UK Police riding standard. Result: massive ego damage

Once I'd swallowed my pride, the coaching was amazing, even though it took me nearly 8 months to come up to full membership test standard. A huge jump in situational awareness was one of the major plusses, together with what subsequent action to take. After passing, I wanted to pay it back so trained as an Observer (coach). Extremely demanding and took another 12 months but boy, has it been worth it.

Currently a backlog in most of the country with riders wanting to be assessed. Really pleasing that so many riders want a reality check.

I had the option of doing a Prorider course last year and when I signed up,Alot of people told me there was no need as they believed I didn't need any more training......

But my attitude was if I just get one thing out of the course its worth my time and money well spent...

I went with an open mind and did I learn new things, It opened my eyes into some of the old habits we retain throughout time,

Regardless of how long your been riding there is always something knew you can learn.

Yes never can get enough training. Road and traffic conditions evolve all the time, so must my riding if Im to be safe.

    Situational awareness,

I think that I am still a learner after 30+ years, so yes I do have an accurate idea of my ability

    • Do you think you require or would benefit from further motorcycle training? require, probably. benefit, absolutely.
    • If you did, what would you most like that training to entail? Road Craft – hazard ID, positioning, reading the environment. I can handle a bike well enough so long as I stay out of the shit.
    • Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability? Probably, dunno. How to know?

Reading Blackbird's blog made me aware of IAM, and I too have gone onto the IAM path and will take the full membership test shortly, then go on to qualify as an Observer.

So, more training than I'm currently on... only adventure riding and more technical off road skills, as IAM is road riding.

Since I'm often being assessed, yes, I have a pretty good idea of my riding ability.

    what he said.
Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.

Yes yes and yes, to all of the above.

However I would prefer coaching vs training, if ya know what I mean.

Require, prolly not. Benefit from, oh yeah. Some recent training really opened my eyes to what I cannot or rather could not do on a bike.
    • If you did, what would you most like that training to entail?

All aspects of off road, on big bikes & little ones. Just to refill the tool box. Also continued training & practice of evasion techniques on the road. Combining brakes, steering, throttle etc.
    • Do you think you have an accurate and honest idea of your ability?

Humblingly, far more so after training than before.
Training & practice is fun with benefits.

I regularly do extra training - so no additional motivation required.

    1. Yes
    2. At the moment I am working on using more of the the road when cornering, and general Road Craft.
    3. I'd like to think so.
