would like to ride in some vmx races to tick it off the bucket list. where and what style of lessons would any one suggest.would it be better to just go out and put riding time or get the lessons first to correct bad habits.

Better to learn it right the first time I think
Smoke 'em if you have 'em
You run what you brung, and pray you brought enough
Contact Chris Birch (google him, it's easier than me mangling his web address) or Tony at the sandpit, the wellington mayhem maker is right about Broxy too.
Make the effort to get the training, it makes a huge difference to your enjoyment. Next, do endless farm rides and thrash yourself into a whimpering heap at the Sandpit, that should fix most things!
Tony at the Sandpit would be the best place to start, both Chris and Broxy tend to be busy and so it's harder to get their time. Plus Tony definitely knows the basics and will get you riding right from the outset. He taught my missus and she rides way better than she should for her experience level.
VMX is fairly easy as most tracks are natural contours , don't be confused with veterans mx as these guys use modern tracks with big jumps etc.
VMX or Vintage motocross you ride a bike from the relevant era be it a twin shock Jawa or BSA to a RM,CR twin shocker.
Some clubs allow bikes with single shocks, disc brakes , water cooling etc this can mean a lot of time going to events far afield of Auck.
50+ isn't that heavy, you may need to consider some lighter springs or consume 3 cheeseburgers a day for a few weeks
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
I must correct direction of thread. I meant 50+ equals, 30 years to late to train for mx nationals,30kgs of padding around middle that wont turn into a six pack,30 minutes of pain when I tank slap the plums,30 minutes looking at 10yr old taking on jumps then deciding I'm not skilled enough then sitting at the car wondering best way to regain my youth.
Sorry, welcome to KB, if there's a chance to attempt weak humour it will be jumped all over.
But more seriously what sort of iron are you thinking of riding? Have a bike in garage or just eyeing up old RM250s? (make mine a era YZ250, but by the time I can afford the time I won't be able to afford the bike).
