    Where is Ian Shaw?

When Ted Simon was riding his Triumph around the world he bumped into a kiwi bloke called Ian Shaw, who was doing a similar trip but in reverse. This meeting took place in East Africa in 1973.

I'd love to track Ian down and to find out more about what happened to him - and potentially document his story. As his meeting with Ted took place some 40 years ago and all we know is that Ian was originally from Hamilton, finding him is no mean feat. So using the power of the web, I am sending out this post in the hope it may trigger somebody who may know Ian Shaw, Kiwi adventure riding pioneer and lead us in the right direction.

This picture is the only picture we have of him which was kindly supplied by Ted Simon himself.

Any information any one may have would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact me at bruce@yeovale.com. Thank you.

    Ian Shaw

Don't know where Ian is today but I knew him in 1971. He was hut mate with another Kiwi, Kerry S., at a salt works in Western Australia. Kerry & I met in NZ and both went to Aussie to make money for traveling. We bought Yamaha 250cc DT1's in Singapore and headed up into Malaysia and Thailand. Ian did the same unbeknowst to us a few weeks later, though i believe he bought an RT1 360cc. Kerry and I were sitting alongside the road in north Thailand when Ian rode by - small world. We traveled together through Thailand and back down to Penang, Malaysia. Kerry & Ian decided to stay in Penang to recover from some injuries and I shipped out to India, heading to Europe. I understand that Ian went to India and then Africa and who knows where else! Kerry shipped his bike to Africa and traveled there. Have lost track of both of them. Attached is a photo - Kerry on bike, Ian standing, unidentified couple on BMW taken in southern Thailand, March 1971. Sure would be interesting to hear from them. Al

Sorry I have nothing to add about finding this bloke but I sure hope you do.

As someone who back packed through SE Asia and the region in 81 and 83, just before it was commercialised and sanitised for tourists, I take my hat off to you guys doing this in the early 70s by bike. Truly brave souls and worthy of being called brave explorer/adventurer.

    More pictures welcome!
