Wheelie dangerous

I'm no expert at wheelies by any extent of the imagination, and neither am I the type of rider that gets a huge kick out of doing them anyway. I can manage to pull the front up off the throttle in first (not difficult on most bikes) but have always struggled with getting my Bird up in any gear off the clutch. Although I never used to experience any problems on other sports/trail bikes I've owned.

Until last night that is - high revs, in second, over a bump, splipped the clutch and with a quick yank on the bars up she came - and then a fkin rabbit ran out in front of me and nearly ruined my day.

I'll stick to wafting around like a nanny I think. Safer and more fun IMO (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!).

Sorry - its off topic, but sparky, what do you mean by thingymajig on the left? Are you referring to one of the controls on the handlebars of your bike, or is that just the way you prefer to "arrange" yourself inside your underwear?

Biff, don't give up on it, it can be bloody good fun, or even just the experiance of learning how, then if it does happen unawares, you'll have more control on the back wheel.. Don't have to be a master at it, but know how it feels and in control makes it more pleasurable when you quietly slip one up.. You'll be grinnin for a while, and all will seem well with the world. Plus, from a safety aspect, it'll be controlled too. Doesn't hurt to know something new, just make sure you're in the open before you give it a go

I don't get what the problem with the rabbit was? Did it put you off your stroke or something?

But just on the off chance you're talking about wheelies, I sympathise with ya. I'm scared shitless of doing them. Most times I've popped one have been completely by accident (best one was while I was evading tax - oh I almost wish I did get picked up by IRD just so I had proof!!) mainly cos I was too fecking interested in staying in the throttle and didn't want to back out like I usually do when the front comes up.

I still have vivid memories of watching WT spinning down the road chasing a Gixxer thou at *ahem* km/h after an error in judgement. Also know Loosebruce from Auckland, who had a similar experience while pulling an inappropriate wheelie at a "not for publication" speed.

madboy, have a go at them.. it could help you ride better, and safer when push comes to shove. Like I said before, you don't have to become a master at them, but if you understand them, you can control it better when it happens, and enjoy it rather than fear it. I used to be the same, even just an inch off the ground was enough to make me panic sometimes. Now I've been practising them more, I've found myself trying to pull the front up out of corners n stuff out of sheer enjoyment. But also, when it happens out of accidental hard acceleration (eh..??), then you know what's going on, and you can ease it on better..

and to flip the bike, you have to really be heavy handed.. just try bliping the clutch a little under med-heavy acceleration, you'll soon see there's nothing much to fear.. And it'll advance your riding technique that little bit more
