Thanks all. I think the lube I have been using is to sticky being normal chain lube. Shes up for a big service after a tree jumped in front of us at the WMC day at Woody last weekend so will whip the chain off and give it a petrol bath.
So does that mean no riding at south head this Sunday?
Takes about 5 min with kero & a toothbrush to give a 1/2 reasonable clean that removes most of the grit that will cause damage. You must be some high powered Eeezectutif as a chain & spkt set is a fair expense for the rest of us.
I envisaged trying to clean between the flats/rollers. Flats/flats. Outside and inside. Not just a cursory swish with a tooth brush.
I picked about three hours. Chain=$120 ish, $40 per hour. Can make more than that at work, which does not mean that I always do.
Brother in law has a very elaborate chain cleaner for push bike chains. Works fuckin unbelievably well, must be able to get bigger ones for proper size chain I expect.

We import the bicycle ones and have been trying to find XXXXXXL ones.

I have Daddy dutys this weekend and a little service work to do on the bike. Was tree vs KDX last weekend.
Oh well, next time.
I too had an encounter with a tree at the WMC ride, on that muddy down hill the back stepped out so throttled on and straight at a tree. luckily I protected the bike with my body.
