Seems like he did the only thing he could. But that's not the point, he should have had a big enough following distance that he had more options.

Yea pretty much, if she stopped without indicating he should stop until he knows why she stopped or which way she was turning, he was lucky he hit the car, he could have got between the car and trailer then he'd have been fucked, she probably wouldn't have noticed him at all and wouldn't have stopped.
I wouldn't wanna get run over by a horse float.
