Sand tracks & dunes near Wellington?

I seriously hate all those tree hugging greenies who get their knickers in a twist and call the cops at the slightest sign of anyone having fun on anything with 2 wheels and an engine. It's pathetic.

Yeah, we should be able to rip up any shit we want, fuck the vegitation and wild life, we dont need it. Our couple of hours fun is a lot more important than keeping some areas like they should be.

Hooning up and down on beaches is generally OK, unless there are lots of people around, particularly Anxious Mothers with children at foot.

But riding over any dune munts them and is Yet Another Practice that gives bikers a bad name because of the damage it does.

Perception is a funny old thing, personally I LOATH to ride past the public on beaches at any speed, but do not see the problem riding some dunes in a out of the way spot along some deserted coastline. Not to mention riding on flat beaches is (to me at least) as boring as watching paint dry, against catching big air and cornering low enough to drag the bars in sand dunes. Yes, I agree not to molest dunes people are trying to restore with sea grass etc is in ourt best interests. I'm talking naked sand dunes right on the sea front where after a decent windy night all traces of said fun are erased. I know such things exist 40 mins away from my location on the east coast, which is hopeless info for the OP.

We have more coastline than the USA, surely there are some places that would be acceptable to have some sand dune fun, away from well known public beaches and tender ecological locations if course.

I wasn't going to go that far, but there have been times where I've been riding a quiet 4 stroke bike, at least 50m away from other people out in a remote area and then people come up to me picking a fight because they're unhappy that I'm having more fun than them.

One time I had about 5 people running after me, and 2 of them dived at me to try and tackle me off the bike. They even sent their dog after me, so I ran the dog over otherwise I would have been beaten up by the pack of (white) savages who were acting like a bunch of monkeys that just escaped from a zoo. Win for me.

Funny how I've never had that sort of thing happen when I'm out hunting. Everyone is so nice to me then.

I hear you, many moons ago this was rammed home to me after I was riding my dirt bike home past a family out walking around a subdivision in the making. I was not riding fast past them, but got the growling face waving fists treatment. Soon as I got home, I swapped onto my 3 wheel ATV (equally loud etc) and rode past the same family, this time getting smiles and waves.

There are places to ride and there are places we need a bit of common sence otherwise the likes of DOC and IWI and the like will close it all down. Some people do get fucked off when out in the back country getting a bit of peace and quiet and a bunch of dudes turn up and start having their fun, I have been one of them from time to time. I would not go so far as to attack one unless it was in self defence though. I also have been on the receiving end of abuse and police reports for having a bit of fun. We are lucky in this part of the country because we get a real mix of terrain to ride for free too though, tis part of the reason I tolerate the crap winters.

I remember a few years ago roosting the dunes around Leithfield beach in N Canterbury on the KX500, good fun but hard on the chain & sprockets etc and a bastard to clean the bike to get the sand off.

I believe that there are some coast dunes out South of Featherston way but haven't been there myself - if you search the adventure bike pages those guys have been most places

Himatangi is a really sandy forest area, its close to taikorea, I dont know how legal the riding is there, but its fairly popular and it is in a pine plantation. ive only ridden there once, and there are also some pretty big dunes, reckon this could be up your alley.
