You should get some decent tyres on that thing and join us planning over in the Adventure/Dual Purpose Bikes part of the forum and heading out on the gravel and dirt.
Winter is awesome as the dust mostly disappears, though managing temperature becomes more of a challenge between cold highway and the tight or technical stuff.
Small wheels of a motard are a bit of a disadvantage in tyre choices, handling etc but it can be done and the rest of the DRZ sm should be as robust as it's big wheeled brother.

A good little hill ride for you guys is the Summit Road from the Sumner end, and coming down at Mt Pleasant.
Not a lot of traffic, but plenty of things to watch out for, like shingle on corners, pine cones under tree sheltered corners, cyclists, runners and cars stopping in the middle of the road. but heaps of fun and good for learners .
You can go from there via the tunnel to Lyttelton, then around to Governors, up to the summit road again, do the south end, down Gebbies to the blue duck, and either head to little river or back to town.
I try to do this in some variation at least once a week, good for all sorts of lessons, and is a good 1 hrs + ride

you can go out to godly heads if you want, another nice ride. but the center section under the gondolier is still closed to motorized traffic.
I agree the two patches I came across of small road repairs on corners would catch the unaware out, Had a nice power slide (if you can call it that on a 2fidy) on the second on in from Sumner, was fun getting the little cruiser sideways with a boot down.
The downhill run via Mt Pleasant is always good for braking practice, and keeping a smart eye out for walking hazards eh
