Bike WoFs

Hi

I might be off here as I wasn't paying attention when they made the changes. Is it only cars manaufactured after 2000 that get yearly WoFs? Are all motorbikes still 6 monthly?

The warrant of fitness process

Updated: 1 December 2009

Legally, you must have your vehicle inspected for a warrant of fitness (WoF):

every 12 months, if your vehicle is less than six years old
every six months, if your vehicle is more than six years old.

Cool, thanks. 6 years seems pretty arbitrary. But then, so do most of the Gubbermints inititiatives....

The changes have not been made yet. Supposed to come into effect 1st October this year. I can't wait, it means the WoF I just got on my car is the last 6 month it'll need. No idea whether the changes applied to bikes as well though..

So in Theory ... My 99 GSX-R was 1st registered on 08-May-2000 so therefore I will end up with 12mth WOF's ....
( 99% of the time it is at WOF standard anyway, worst that happens is that the tyres get low & then I replace them anyway since it is my nuts on the line )

Warrant of fitness

The warrant of fitness package is:

after initial inspection, no further inspection until vehicles are three years-old

annual inspections for vehicles three years and older, first registered on or after 1 January 2000

six-monthly inspections for vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000

extra education and communication measures will be developed to encourage New Zealanders to keep their vehicles roadworthy

extra Police enforcement activities...

Ministry of Transport and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) monitoring to assess any effects on safety the changes may have (additional measures will be considered, if needed)
The changes are likely to be implemented from 1 July 2014, or possibly earlier.

Certificate of fitness

The certificate of fitness package is:

keeping the current default six-monthly inspection frequency but allowing NZTA to vary inspection frequency from three to 12 months depending on a transport operator’s safety performance
allowing vehicle owners and operators to have greater choice about where and from whom they get their vehicles inspected. This will include the flexibility to bundle service and inspection together, and possible accreditation for operators to manage the safety of their vehicles.
The changes are likely to be implemented from 1 July 2014, or possibly earlier.

• Policy to apply to bikes and cars as stated above, three years from date of first registration and then yearly there after, except for bikes and cars first registered prior to 1 Jan 2000.

• Government have agreed to this policy outcome

• The Rule to operationalise the policy has been consulted on with submissions closing in late May.

• Proposed to have the Rule in place and operating by October...
