I rode to Akaroa on Saturday in a large, fast riding group of all different bikes and none of us had any drama around that area, with the cones about you have to expect a loose road surface, there were a couple of spots past that with quite unexpected grit though.

    Well said.

Grit in winter shouldn't be 'unexpected'. Rain will fall in some places overnight and not others, temperatures will vary, grit will get laid in some places and not others.

Guy in the vid was having a lovely fang, pity he made some errors of judgement and dropped his bike, but could have been much worse.

Didnt read the signs, twisted the right hand too much, forget to set a pace that allows for winter road surfaces......sad.
No sympathy for anyone caught out by grit in winter on hills.......ITS FUCKING WINTER what do you think will be on the roads....
If your comment is aimed at me, go fuck youself. Some of us actually ride all year round. I took full responsibility for my avoidable crash. You have no idea as to the exact circumstances leading up to it so dont sermonise about an event you know nothing of. The tone of my thread is not to search for obvious road hazards but more to be aware of roads that have been swept, look clean but yet contain hard to see grit between road chips. Overconfidence in what appears to be a good surface can lead to mrcornersluts wee moment.

I ride 24/7. all conditions I dont fall off very often, twice in fifteen years from memory
But if that makes me a fuckwit, then I will accept the label.
I accept that its winter and ride accordingly, grit is just another road surface to ride .......
too many miles ridden to be caught out by a simple thing as a gritted road surface on a hill...

You truly are a riding god and we are blessed that you allow your pearls of riding wisdom to fall on unworthy swine like us..........

Why did mrcornerslut jump on the brakes so hard and bin it? Looked like there was plenty of room for the bike to squeeze through and stop safely?

Yep needed a bit more defensive riding, while there was almost zero warning of the roadworks or traffic lights, it doesn't make a difference who's fault it is if you wake up in hospital!

In the end looked like he just lost the front at the last second, bummer.
