KTM 520 as a motard?

So I really love my R1 but thinking of getting something that will be a bit of a hoot for a while so thought i'd look at a motards..

Was looking at the following bikes and was wondering what the upkeep and such is on the road

KTM 520
KTM 660 SMC
Husqavana 610
XR600

Any help would be much appreciated.

yyeerr go the motards orsome fun lv mine , any ktm would b orsome i only wish to have one, i only have a drz400sm with a few extra bits on it

but its orsome all the fun in the world and still under 120kmh.........

Whats the frequency I would have to do oil changes, top end and bottom ends??

i do oil changes every 2000 km and how many km b for ya have to rebuild mmmmmm shit loads the boys in the states are 15000 miles before the look at just the valves.......as long as ya look after them i e good oils and stuff the will go

While I love the EXC motards I've ridden, a factory motard is sooooo much nicer handling it's not funny.

Yeh I was looking at the factory built ones but unfortunately if I want to keep the R1 as well then a factory SM is a little outside of the price bracket, with the cheapest one I've seen about 6K!!

Just replied to your post on the trading forum. My 650 would be as good as you would get for all round fun for under 5K......got some cool stuff like vapour dash, pro circut muffler, oversize front disc on the dirt wheels etc. Easy as to maintain no shimming of valves just do regular oil changes. Get a cheap flight to chch, i'll ship all the dirt stuff to Auckland. You can ride it home, I'll take the flight and ferry price off the $5K! You would need a new ass by the time you get there though.

I have the exact same model but even cleaner. I'm looking to sell it. The rego has been cancelled unfortunately. I had the top end rebuilt a short while after I bought it. Previous owner had a high comp piston installed but hadn't accounted for the tolerances.

So it's a near new bike just sitting in my garage.

I raced an EXC modded to SX specs and then some for a few years. I had it rebuilt when I got it (40 hours) and did 40+ race hours.

Totally reliable but I changed the oil every meet and filters every second. That will get dear on the road. Easy as to service though.

I would not use any RFS engined KTM on the road. The LC4 is a much better idea. The 660SMC however is a comp motor remember. The smaller LC4s go hard for a road bike. They are comfy enough too unless you ride a 'wing usually.

Dunno about other brands. The Suzuki 400 motard I rode was gutless with poo brakes. Not much fun.

i own a 2006 525exc, and its so much fun!!! i do my oils every 1500kms, check the valve clearances fairly regularly, (to date, they've never even needed adjusting). the best thing i find is, i dont need to find somewhere to ride, like a dirt bike, and i dont have to wash grass out of it all week. and they're sooo much fun!!! ride some nice twisty roads, and nothing will be able to touch you... and i mean nothing. and it gives me that silly grin, that i havent had since i was bout 10.

Do you go over the Takas often? The joy factor riding a motard over that hill is crazy. Nothing beats the sound of a large single throttling off on that hill.

How muchie? , did you go back to standard piston for the rebuild? how many km/hours on the rebuilt motor?
