Hi Kiwibiker,
I don't post much here on KB but I have been posting occasionally keeping up with my new journey in to the world of motorcycles. Having bought a bike a month or so ago, I decided it was time to go for my BHS test.
I chose Rider Training for 2 reasons. The first was because they were the cheapest BHS provider I could find, and the 2nd was that reading their website, I got the impression it was more friendly than other more official training providers seemed (e.g passrite whom provider car and other vehicle training so would be testing on nothing more than from a guideline book with no real discernment, in my opinion)
I showed up at the Massey Unviersity Albany carpark where Rider Training holds their sessions at 12pm. It had been raining on and off all day, but the training and testing was done inbetween downpours. We did the paperwork and got the payment sorted, then after Steve finished with somebody else, we started. I had booked a Refresher course as I had been practicing for a month before hand on private premises and thought I'd only need about 15-30 minutes of practice and a 2nd opinion before I tested - I was wrong though. There was a lot wrong with my technique, mainly on the cornering aspect, and Steve helped me to realise my main mistakes being not looking far enough ahead in a corner, turning in to the corner too early for a 180 turn, and target fixation - it is great to have learnt about the proper technique for this and will make roundabouts especially a lot more relaxed for me. I was also doing some stupid habits which arose from scooter riding![]()
The training + test in total took about 1 1/2 hours, a half hour more than I paid for, however Steve completed the training he thought was enough to get me up to scratch (and it was), and the test, at no extra cost. He showed an obvious passion for the training and the success of students, gave great advice and lessons, and I would highly recommend them if you're going to sit your BHS test! Just don't book too little time from being over confident
On a final note, I PASSED my BHS test but have a lot to learn. I will be getting my learners license this week and will be able to go out there and practice what I've learnt from this lesson - I hope to book more training soon!
