Just bought bike in USA. These docs are so needed in NZ

So went out and bought kxf250 2009 for $700.00 need new top end easy as . Anyway having had a bike stolen back home thought what they have here is a great idea and should be done in NZ
So the idea is when you but the bike new you get papers from dealer as shown and a sale agreement (the second page in pic) once bike is resold you get a bill of sale from the seller and he keeps a copy as well not sure how long he is required to keep. basic idea you show up at ride / bike park and get asked for papers and cant show them it can be assumed to be stolen. Even when bike are sold at auction as a wreck the papers are required to go with it to show proof of ownership. Just a little thing kept in glove box easy as.

A great idea. There are no official papers issued in New Zealand that show proof of ownership for motor vehicles.

Would only really work if A) the thief's or recipient's frequent official parks &/or B) it doesn't get stripped for parts

But if they are kept in the glove box and the car gets stolen.... see where I'm heading here?

As for bike what if you ride the bike to track, papers would have to be on the bike.

Damn, $700 for a '09 kxf, nice buy, on ebay ??, I'm in the USA @ the moment, that's awfully affordable for a second bike over here

I agree on the papers, yes things could go wrong, but maybe if MNZ tried they could get NZTA to do DirtBike tracking using their core software, electronic being an even better approach.

So every time you go for a ride you have to faff around with papers and prove ownership? Sounds a lil' over the top to me. And surely there could be an easier way, I mean even my dog has a microchip ferchrissakes.

No papers = no ride is a bit too much to expect from the ride organisers, you're pushing the responsibility of checking the legality of a bike onto people who don't need to be involved in the process.

However proof of ownership for sale is definitely a good idea. I have seen bikes advertised as 'no papers' in the States and they generally go for next to nothing as a result, which would discourage bike thieves. The only main issue I see is the thousands of bikes already in circulation in NZ that have no paper trail. Even though I bought my bike new, I'd struggle to prove it's mine if ownership was questioned (lost the receipt ages ago and the dealer isn't doing KTM anymore). But once you start the process and everyone who sells a bike from now on has to register themselves as the legal owner first, that problem would quickly disappear.

No you dont need to show them unless asked hence keep them in your gear bag or car I guess still gota work on that one only been here 3 weeks of 3 years.

you dont need to show to go on a ride just need to prove its yours if asked from what i understand they do ask every now an then so pays to have papers easier to have and prove its yours than the other option

Who is the "they" you talk about though? If it's cops doing spot checks at rides, or pulling over a ute loaded with bikes, that makes sense. But if you've just driven 4 1/2 hours from Auckland to Taupo for a ride and left your papers at home on the day "they = ride organisers" decided to do a check on your bike, what then?

topend is off it just waiting on parts has done bout 50-60 hrs all up

probably the same thing that happens if you leave your helmet at home
