I hate to be one of those pricks that says: "works for me" but....

For sure ~ I made the long challenge section last year on my KTM 530 with a 15 liter tank..that really holds 17 liters. I did carry 2 liters of fuel but, didn't need them...fyi..
Thinking about just carrying 1 liter of fuel extra this year.....you just never know![]()

I think the tank my ktm 450 is only 10 or 12 litres, in any case I used 19!
How the fawk did you get the 530 through on 15 ? Is it injected ?

Having just returned from our 2014 January version of the Dusty Butt I can confirm.......
There is definitely a 24hour credit card fuel pump at Ranfurly and possibly Omakau.
I didn't fuel up at Omakau but there was definitely a sign saying 24hr fuel on the servo building so gather there is a creditcard pump there as well, someone may want to ring them direct and confirm but would be a godsend for small tank holders

For me the main route has some challenges.
The actual 'Serpinetine Challenge' is fun.
The Omarama Saddle Challenge vs the Omarama Saddle non challenge - there isn't much difference other than number of wet bits and a little steepness added.
The Awakino is the gut buster challenge of them all and borderline a bit much for me when included within an already huge ride... but if you're good with steepness involving lots of fist sized or bigger loose rocks and rivers then you're in for a treat.
I'm skipping the Awakino this year to save energy and time to better enjoy the rest of the ride, but I hope go back and do an overnighter through Mt Buster some other time instead. The Awakino Challenge pops out and joins the Mt Buster track about half way through (right about where my old 2011 Awakino video ends) so I'll still get the feel of it with out actually going on the Awakino half of that section of DB1k, but then it will be at a leisurely pace and a night in a hut specifically to mess about on that terrain.

I would agree with TA in that the Awakino if really the only significantly challenging section. I would say that if you trail ride and you always do the 'Enduro only' sections then you won't have any difficulty subject to your chosen mount of course. If you sometimes attempt the Enduro sections and mostly get through then I reckon you'll be challenged but alright. If you would never attempt an Enduro section then you'll find the Awakino 'Epic' !!
I took my 450 through last year and noticed one spot where more bikes than not where being man handled up a short steep section but momentum wins the day in bits like that. Later you come a steep and rocky climb on the way to the summit, I worked up a good sweat on that section and had to stop for breath every km or so which gave me pause to consider the demands of bringing my 900 up the same part(my plan for this year!)
It seemed to me that a good number of the most suitable 'big bikes' (950 super enduros, r1100 gs etc) avoided that section and some less suitable ( a Vstrom for instance ) did make it through. At the end of the day there's enough peeps around that unless you're way out of your depth there will be someone(s) there that will help you get through.
I'm not sure where I got the idea but I think this year may be the same course as last but in reverse...

wrong fella, there were three 1200's a 990 & 950 that I know ofbut I did not take the 1150Gs through the challenge sect in 2013 as I did them the two previous years on the 1150, & a lot of

thanks, I know that 'difficult' is only relative, however one can get an idea based on general perception. For instance the CNut hill on the Wairarapa is perceived as far as I know as a difficult section for a mid to big sized bike, possible not much so on a smaller lighter enduro bike.
I tend to have more problem with steep downhills than equivalent steep uphills ... lack of guts...
I agree that if there is people to help some bits can be passable when on your own are possible a bit over the top. At this stage I'm on my own so will see when the time gets closer.
