Ok haven't tested the battery use side of things... having the phones GPS active doesn't seem to affect things much but i can imagine the signal searching and sending info might especially if it can't find cell tower reception.
Maybe just ping the glympse from time to time instead of running for the duration could be an option.
I might look at hooking up a charger for the phone in to my tail bag or something.. or get hold of one of those cool Power Monkey battery systems....or not.

Thanks Shrek it's defiantly between the pool burn dam and the next two gates heading towards Dunedin. As I stoped and took a photo and it's there in the pic. It was not long after this 2 gates when I noticed it gone. It's a Garmin dekota 20 grey with orange

By active do you mean running a GPS app full time or just ticked on in settings? Must be a very good GPS chipset if the former. My, and other's, experience is that GPS eats battery juice. But rigging up a charger from the bike is no biggie so battery life is not really an issue until you get off the bike.

Yup, my experience too. The smartphones I've had generally eat a battery in about 5hrs with GPS running

Just ticked on the settings so it only takes a second to show your position locked when you actually start an app that wants to know where you are (or was that just my imagination? perhaps I just hadn't moved far enough to worry it)...
But yes, just having the likes of OruxMaps logging your track devastates battery life, tried that while on foot for several hours and will go back to track logging with a real GPS again... though I thought it may be the constant writing to SD card that did it.

End of story really is as you say unless you have external power for the phone it won't last half a DB1k day.

Edit: ok, dmoo1790's the post made me more curious about the way things work, I guess I only had it enabled but the GPS probably doesn't track until an app looks for the location so if I've moved or been long enough between times of using a GPS app then it likely will still take some time to lock on location again.

The other gotcha with phone GPS is most are A (assisted) GPS which means they need cell or wifi network to get data to make a quick fix. Without Internet access they make take a very long time to lock or not lock at all. So the trick is start your app in town where it can lock fast before you go bush.

GPS maps should be ready shortly

    Hi,
Festy pinged Gordon from Epic about the GPS maps/route (as he has just to a garmin) and like a few newbies, wants to get it on soon and learn how to use it. This was their reply

    20th Feb
    "Hi Andrew,
You should have received an email from us about a week ago saying that as soon as the pre-ride audit has been completed then the GPS files will be finalised and sent out to you?
The boys are on their way back now, so I expect this will all be completed and ready for downloading over the next 2-3 days.

    Best regards,
    Claire"

    Not long now....
...back in the saddle, and getting a little!

    new wolfy bags

Just got these installed for the DB ride...really nice bags. I like saddle bags as they get the weight low, and having them soft means that they don't break or squash ya legs like the hard box's. The have heaps of straps and securing points and fully waterproof.

Got them from revzilla and it took about 4 days to arrive...from USA

Now I can carry a 5L container inside one bag and have enough fuel for 340K's
