I don't know what's happened to 'the big announcement' but I'm glad someone discovered that and posted the link.

1st and 2nd of March and of course the meet n greet and briefing being the Friday evening, 28th February 2014.
Have to admit that having a few extra weeks to separate DB1k budget from the Christmas budget will be nice.
Now eyes pealed for the entry portal to open... only 150 spots again.

Like mattsdakar I've been on every one bar the very first and thoroughly enjoyed all of them, thanks Ryan.
It really has grown somewhat though hasn't it?

Without Ryan I wouldn't have seen most of what I've seen by 2 wheels and that goes far beyond the DB1k for me. Thanks man.

shoot, just trying to remember who else was on the very first, thought I could be the last man standing of the DB1k starters, was thinking even R didn't make all the starts but no, I was confusing that with our 'back to finish the job' trip in April 07 after the inaugural March 2007 attempt...
Might to go watch my 2007 video again. Oh the low quality picture from the crappy old helmet camera though.

Did Alf do them all too?

    Thanks Ryan

Ryan - if you're watching this thread - thanks for making this event possible in the first place. Having done 4 Dusty Butt ADV rides organised by you (2009- 2012) I express my sincere thanks

    Hi all,

    Thanks for your comments.

It's not without a lot of thought that I've arranged to pass the Dusty Butt onto others to arrange and run. It has been a hobby of mine for a while now, since 2007. The move to pass it to Epic Events was motivated by wanting to keep the event alive, given the awesome feedback that you all have been giving me over the years. I'm sure there will be a few changes to the event, due to necessity, and that Epic Events will keep the tradition of the event alive. Claire and Gordon are excited to be running the event.

Assuming work doesn't get in the way, I intend to see you all in March. Speaking of work, this is the key reason why the change. I've a new job, check out page 11 of this http://issuu.com/the.star/docs/113280ob

    cheers
    Ryan

There were - plug, transalper, warewolf, busajim, magicfairy, nordie, and me. Was there anybody else? I've started them all, not finished them all though

There is a list on the end of my video, Alf was a starter too, 8 of us on 7 bikes, magicfairy being pillion with busajim (now balrog).
Technically I suppose no one finished them all as no one finished 2007.

    Ohhhh, a manager now.
    Careful, next'll be a BMW...

It wasn't until 5 months after the first Dusty that I learned to ride gravel properly...

Don't joke. I brought a Triumph Tiger 955i a couple of weeks back as my "commuter bike"

    Cheers R

Yes a big thanks Ryan, iv enjoyed 4 of them, and one epic 24 hour ride in 2012,on my exc450 in 18hrs.55 min at 51 years of age was truly awsome. as it started out as a 24hr ride, the trick was dont stop except for gates and gas, i dought ill do it again. Iv been on few epic events rides over the years and they were done at a hige calibre, all the best guys, c you in 2015. I think dakapete was an other rider in 07

Pete on the Dakar was called Plug here on the forum, we still bump in to him from time to time.
Last time we met he still had the KTM which he got after the Dakar, but it needed work done and other things had taken priority over rebuilding it.

You are right TA, Alf was on the first ride, got about 6-7 punctures I recall believe thats why you only got as far as Murchison, he has missed a couple since then though. I think I missed the first one due work committments (same old story) but managed to do the rest including one day efforts.

It was debatable under Ryan’s leadership, but it is certain under Epic Events (a commercial organization) stewardship that a Concession from DoC for access to conservation land such as the Oteake area, and a Resource Consent from the Otago District Council for such an event as the DB1k (even on public roads) is a requirement. Other bureaucratic matters like audited safety plans and public liability insurance loom.

Will they be obtained? I can’t see any evidence of such on EE’s website.

Lack of any wouldn’t stop me from entering, as I strongly believe that all riders take responsibility for their own behavior and well-being, and I’m not trying to stir the pot by asking the question, but having been involved in running many similar multi-day rides in the same area, I’m aware of the rules.

Despite one helicopter ride, I’ve really enjoyed the 5½ times I’ve ridden the DB. The low-key low-cost formula that Ryan developed was very popular, and rightly so. The long-distance short time-frame nature of the event kept the number of entries by dick-heads to a minimum and an entry fee at whatever level that EE strikes will further reduce those irritations.

My hope is that the 150 available places will sell out quickly, thus confirming the future of the DB is assured, as it deserves to be after Ryan’s able work.

    Puncture Man himself.

The only tyres with issues on that ride were TKC80's.

Hope to (finally) be able to do another DB1k. The last one was 2008 on my DRZ400 with a 10L can tied onto the rear rack, haha. 21 hours and 1000km later...

For me the Army has been getting in the way of important things for the last few years with deployments and training... 2014 might just be the year I break in my Africa Twin with a DB1K!

March is good for me as it gives me time to sort the bike out and swap in my second engine for a bit of a trial run.

Now just to make the 150...

We should come home from our adventures having faced their perils and uncertainties, endured their discomfort and beaten the odds, with a sly acknowledgment and revitalised solidarity of character.
