I believe it was a blue Fox bumbag. I'll buy back number plate 40WQA if found and a Trailtech stand from last year too.

made it back home last night had good ride with even more awesome riders
started with 3.5h cross through Molesworth nonstop
then some deep gravel at night looking for a hutt which was not without many "moments"
then a wet ride from Oxford to Fairlie where heated greaps stopped working on the last 50k
Saturday saw us with early start (6am), being the second group till a ktm 690 and stock dr passed us like standing.
first minor issue there chain came off on a river but no biggie other than wet foots for me and Jack who pushed me out.
It was then were ktm and dr passed. but it wasn't a race. later on dropped the bike on a gate when stopping to close it. it was were my finger got caught and as it turned is Broken which I found today.
Then some more gravel fuel and into Awakino. It was one of the hardest things I have rode on. It totally and utterly burned me. I'm reasonably fit but griping the bike to death must have caused me to totally burn. Finally needed help to lift the bike several times. Help to ride bike down on one small section and after the first Hutt started to get multiples cramp all at once.
One of my buddies ride bike up that section while I took energy gel and sodium to help with cramps. While I rested the bike electric s were on which depleted my Small battery. Luckily the ktm could run without one so we swapped battery. The rest was very slow for me half burned half panicked with lot of snow and awesome views. We could see Mount Cook awesome again.
The final descent was scary for me. My brakes, worked extra hard
Finally on last challenge between Cromwell and Alexandra was more my thing (read easy) and had some fun. regrettably was very dusty specially final fast section
we got back 8pm
Sunday my finger was really swollen and decided to bypass most of the day except last easy section through black forest with Crim. it was fun and on parts very dusty.
finally Monday saw us chasing the storm which for the most part left us dry, except maybe 10k around kaikoura
the sailing got me bad and passed two hours throwing out so got back petty bad. many thanks to vegeman that helped me with some distractions and bottle of water (sorry mate couldn't talk much and also all the water went back to the sea and a bit on my backyard :-S)
very descriptive account of your time Pablo - sounds like you had a great time - that Awakino Saddle is certainly something else and yes the descent can be challenging!
Nice report thanks for posting![]()
those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind..

90% of all Harleys built are still on the road... The other 10% made it back home...
Ducati... Makeing riders into mechaincs since 1964...
I lost mine some were after awakino no idea brand but bought it super cheap auto 500g one slight melt in it
we waited at the challenge and bypass intersection for a while then thepom went up the road you must have went up for a while but you were no where to be seen. we thought you kept going up that road or maybe we missed you and you headed up the big saddle while we were crossing the river - glad you got out in the end....
thought there was no way you were getting up after that crash but you didnt even get hurt - you were rolling like a broken doll and i thought i was going to be picking you out of the fence
1 - how you landed (did check to see if he was ok before i took the pic.....)
2 - landed 8 m from the bike
3 - skid in the gravel to where the ditch launched your back wheel and where your bike landed
4 - my second off in the lammamores - didnt get pic of the first one as the bike was hurting my leg too much
1 - someone didnt quite make the corner
2 - Ryan in action
3 - Olly having a quick rest
4 - best mango smooty ever at laurence
5,6 - chopper looking for someone with a broken collar bone
7 - watching the weather close in
Thanks for all your help, Tim. Your willingness and patience were invaluable to my first DB.
Who'd have thought hitting the deck and then picking up a little mite like the Freewind out of ruts 5 times in 45 minutes would be so tiring? I felt a lot better after a wee rest and a cuppa down the road.
After the puncture identified at Moa Creek added insult to incompetence, Gordon from Epic and the omnihelpful Struan did most of my flat fix for me. Gordon had some good technique to borrow as well.
Heading back to Danseys with Struan on sweep behind I got another flat and his idea to borrow the wheel off Dave's broken DR was genius.
Thanks, Dave for the loan and later for the tube as well. You're a gent.
Made it back to Fairlie via the Haka at night (an experience in itself) to have done close to 1100 km for the weekend. Got in about 9pm I think, with my trailer-toting chaperone.
Currently stuck in Picton with Rogson and many others (this posted from my phone). We hope to be on the 7pm tonight but Neptune may have other ideas.
Lots of people helped this first timer and it was much appreciated. Tim, Struan, Rogson, Cooneyr and Transalper spring to mind but I am sure there were others.
Looking forward to coming back for another go, with at least a fresh rear tyre and maybe a more suitable machine.
Photos to follow when we finally get home!
Cheers, Chasio
My first Dusty Butt done. I had a fantastic time. Thanks Pouakai for organising the Friday ride which got very interesting doing the orari gorge section, i wouldn't have coped as well as you did, i was most impressed. Saturday was great, i hooked up with Matt and Dwayne riding 570 Husabergs who led me over the Awakino ranges. ( i watched many videos of this on youtube) nothing prepared me for what was in front of me. It was without doubt the hardest terrain i have ever ridden on. I somehow managed to get over without an off. Cheers Matt and Dwayne for leading me over. The Lamamoors managed to throw me off once, got through serpentine and big Omarama saddle no problem. What a great weekend thanks to cynna thepom and pete-blen as well. Taking the WR 450 was the best idea thanks SE950. My son is keen for next year on my XTZ 660. The hard standard seat on WR was ok even riding back to ch ch. I plan to return next year.

Another pleasant DB1k, nice to ride with Ryan and TA again-just like old times. Thanks to TA for his help getting through the gooey bit over the Lammerlaws. Also a big thank you to Noel Jackson at High Country Motorcycles for dropping everything to help sorting my fuelling issues. Please look him up for all your specialist American bike needs.
Cheers
A
