Wof and rust

Sorry if this has been done to death but I'm a pommie fresh off the boat in Auckland.

I uncreated my bike from the sea journey and it is more rusty than when it went in. My wof fail worries are

1. Rust on frame, I've just jet washed it and it now looks better than in the pic. If need be I have a can of silver spray paint.

2. Indicator hanging off.. Has been re-taped several times. It still works.

3. No red reflector on back of bike. I have a tail tidy with a red led light. I think it might be reflective. Not sure.


How long should a wof take? Is it something I could do in a 45 min lunch time at the vtnz in kingsland or even Colemans?

Rub bunched tin foil on the rusty metal.
Buy reflector and indicator.

If its been checked already then the 3 items can be rechecked if under 28days within mins.


If you don't have plate etc best you find out what else you will need do to get it vinned etc. And this will mean vtnz.

Red led tailight wont cut it mate,well didnt for me anyway,bought a cheap pushbike reflector cut it in 1/2 and attached with sticky tape problem solved.Wof should only take around 1/2 an hour give or take,depends how far he rides it.

the rust is only surface, so not an issue, a bit of fine wire wool or as said above, a bit of scrunched up tin foil would remove it. as for the indicator is it still wired up but broken and dangling? if still attached ..ust feed it back into place and secure with black electrical tape..youll be sweet!

I will try the foil metal wool thing.. Bit hard to so at night with a head torch in the garden! And yep the indicator is still on, just a bit droopy where it's had the old black electrical tape trick done many a time !

I've just remembered that the whole back of my top box is a big ole reflector but I doubt that will wash. Bicycle reflector sounds like a good idea.

I don't need to get it rego'd, just wof'd and pay acc.

Top box if removable isn't accepted. I got a small trailer reflector from supercheap for a few dollars that has double side tape on it.

I'm assuming from you 'bike' and the pics it's a drz 400 you're talking about.....

In which case, wof man won't care about surface rust on the frame, it goes with the territory. Indicator, just tape it up again like I do to mine at wof time. Reflector, cheapest stick on thing you can find.

are you sure youyr first stop is a WOF or a Vin check, with which they will do provide a wof anyway, wont be 20 mins either though

Vin check first. I'll go do it on Saturday morning when I have more time.. Also moving into a new house that day. Busy busy :-)

Eh? Your ACC payment is taken off the registration fee so you will find you will have to get it registered. If you have found some other loophole let us know. Are you keeping it on UK plates or something?

it seems the NZTA is like the UK DVLA- confused.

I went to Kingsland VTNZ, they'd said the form i'd printed off the NZTA was out of date, and even if it was valid they wouldn't know what to do with it. I rang them the day before to check if they did know what it was, they told me to come in and see if computer said yes or no. So this morning they suggested I try AA in Mount Roskill. AA in Mount Roskill said the bike needs a quick look at by a compliance inspector, but not a whole compliance test. There is no mention of this on the NZTA tempory import page on their website, but hey ho. AA Mount Roskill don't do compliance.. Not available there, so they send me to AA testing at Panmure. Compliance man doesn't work Saturdays, and no compliance centre is open on a Saturday apparently. So more time off work to become legal. AHHH.

Oh well.
