I have the TomTom app on my iPhone too, but only use it occasionally. When I used it for two weeks straight, 8 hours a day it ruined my battery. That was plugged in all the time too - discharging fast and charging fast at the same time = very very hot phone and ruined battery.

I use a GPS all the time. I have a large sceen Garmin for the road and an old TomTom one for adventure biking. I use the sucky cup to stick the TomTom to the speedo lens, and it has never come off. Once you have used a GPS for planning and navagating you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner

Bought one (Garmin) for the car yesterday from JB Hi Fi at Westgate. Awesome shop and brilliant service from the knowledgeable employee about the device. They don't stock any for a bike so I have to buy one online?

I just use a plain old car jobby. Not water proof or anything but heaps cheaper. If you are a serious all weather rider you can buy a waterproof phone/GPS holder.

I use a work supplied Galaxy Tab2 10.1 on a windscreen mount. Sure makes it easy to read at speed. Does a surprisingly good job using google maps if I have to be honest. Also handy when you hit D'Auckland, flick it on to watch movies whilst sitting on the SH1 carpark. Maybe not too good on a bike though I have yet to try it.

After a bit of GPS research on the net, it would appear the cheap ones on Trade Me that don't actually mention maps are only selling you the unit.
I'm only guessing here that they do not have legitimate software.
So you pay your money and take your chances.
