Difference between Suzuki GSX-R600 and GSX-R600U?

My cousin is looking to buy a new bike, he is still on learners though but he knows how to ride as he is been riding my bike for pretty long as time now. He wants to buy gsxr 600 but in LAMS list it says only gsxr 600U is allowed. I have no clue with these 2 models at all. Any idea whats the difference between 2? Also I cant find any U model on trademe as well :/

    Thanks for any help

How many times is this going to go on? A GSXR600U is on the LAMs list because it is restricted, the reason you can't find any is there's none brought to NZ.

A GSXR600 is not on the LAMs list, therefore he can't legally ride one on his learners/restricted licence.

The LAMS (GSXR600U) is a detuned version - probably a slow lump ... but looks like a real sports bike ...

A severely detuned version, standard GSXR600 has about 115-120hp, 600U would have to be less than half that to be LAMS legal.

ECU is different i know that much. There is no way to cheaply or easily derestrict them when you progress with your license, changing the ecu alone would be easily $1000+

Can't the ECU be flashed to normal 600 specs? Is the engine and fuel system different?

There's a video on youtube of some english guy riding a few of their learner bikes including a restricted 600. I'm not sure if it's factory restricted or aftermarket though.

One of the selling points of the restricted 600 is that when you get your full license you can open it up to full power.

I imagine it's an exhaust piece and maybe a new map on the ECU which should be pretty simple to do. Maybe not even a new fuel map.

You're talking about a bike with literally half the standard model's power output. It aint just a map and a couple of inserts.

It probably wouldn't run with the standard cams, so they're almost certainly different.
