No, this bike was stock, it has the original rear muffler, I tried different set ups on this bike but stayed with the original because it gave me the performance I wanted as a street bike, better top end

here's the pic with me and the ER before the trade, the XR500 in the background belonged to my brother at the time, it was previously owned by Lance Bravington, another Hawkes Bay XR rider. I also owned that later on.......there's a story behind that bike as well...........in fact when I look at this pic I owned all the vehicles seen here over a period of time, HD wagon...my parents then, and a vauxhall Victor owned at that point by my brother...that car was a special build he did, it had a 2.3 van motor converted to 11.1 comp. 28/36 dcd Weber, and a Datsun SSS gearbox fitted with a specially made adapter plate, I sold it to a young kid who raped it around a lamp post.....unfortunately he didn't hurt himself.....but totalled the car
Nice, those were the days aye

bit different eh muzz, seems like the 1982 models came out with that swingarm, although id never seen or noticed one before
rode it for the first time today, out to bike show (which was a great success) and then on to clubrooms for a drink, then home again
about 60 kms round trip, engine starts and runs perfect, shocks are a bit bouncy bouncy and need replacing sooner than later
forks a bit soft, but will be improved with flush and fresh oil no doubt, oh and will change the back knob for a universal of sorts
but other than that its a great ride. spoke to quite a few guys today that all said..'fuck i want another 500' etc storys of xr's
    xl's dr's tt's and sp's flowed like a confessional

Rear shocks can be re-built, despite supposedly being non-rebuildable. New seals and oil, re-gas= all good!
I used to make new shafts 30mm longer, and fit a 30mm spacer between the spring seat and the eye. Doesn't give
any more travel, but lifts the back a fair bit. Any higher and the chain wrecks the slider too much!

Aren't the shafts the same diameter as the ones in the cheap step fitness machines?

i must say i would like longer shocks, the xl is lower that the xr500, having 330mm shocks as standard, id like 420mm on the rear cos it def needs
the lift! so to rebuild the non rebuilders..how do ya get em apart? cut and re weld when seals and oil are done? any one got any ideas on replacement shocks? wemoto has cheapies, progressives are close to $400 on ebay

that's a good pic for sure, got to congratulate you man for doing such a great job and putting together a great looking XR (XL)...
pic is Martin Corry's mint XL500, my XR 500 and Michael Mansell's (Dippy) Dr 400, just before heading out on a ride

we spent 8 hundy doing a motor rebuild on that DR, ....shortly after some scum stole it from where it was parked at the Angus Inn Hastings one afternoon while we were having a drink stop
never saw it again......... I don't even think it was insured either...
