    Motonau/Greta Valley trail ride

What an excellent ride! Short main loop-30kms and 20kms of tricky enduros!!!! Weather was awesome-showing 31 degrees when we left. Only about 250 riders so not at all busy. The enduros were so much fun, 3 sections of MTB tracks into gullies and a fourth section that just went on forever. I did stay out of the extreme enduro section because I chose life! And only $50! The views from the ridges over Motanau were incredible. I will be back for this one. Next week is Danseys. Bring it.

I didn't do Motanau in favour of going to Danseys, heading down Friday, going to head into Mt Buster on Sunday

Sweet weekend! You think you will have enough energy for Mt Buster after Danseys? Which way will you be going in? The Dansey's intermediate loop is too easy imho. Advanced trees [and hopefully advanced tussock] FTMFW!

I'm normally ok the day after a ride, Staying in Naseby Saturday night and go in from there, not sure what loops we'll do, I haven't been to it before

Naseby is a good base. The ride up Mt Buster is loose with lots of water tables. Fun on the Beta. Look to go right at Mt Buster proper and up Mt Kyeburn, then down onto Dansey's pass and back to Naseby. Be careful about heading into the Awakino, unless you are on the KTM, because fuel.

Probably heading up and across to the Ida Railway hut and back, but we might come back down Kyeburn, range is an issue although I have a 6 L fuel bladder I can take

I did have enough energy for both days barely, started on advanced trees and bailed at the second road crossing, getting through it ok but taking too long, went back on the road and did Intermediate which would be like a Grenville main loop but it was pretty good.

Sunday went in from the Kyeburn end to Ida Railway hut returning the same way, 76km, bunch of guys at Tailings hut had done Danseys then driven in with their bikes to spend a night there and go riding, 19 x 4wd at Ida having lunch when we arrived, one big moment when I clipped a rock with the front wheel and it went under the skid plate and rear wheel and launched me a bit sideways

I'd be surprised if you got through both advanced loops with out it being dark, guy beside us took 5 hours on Trees alone and said it wasn't a good life choice

You are right. We started at 9.30am on the Advanced trees and kept a really steady pace. We had a minimum of breaks and only had one hiccup when I failed on a really gnarly hill climb that was causing carnage, on the way back to the park. We got back at 1.30pm! WTF! No way we had time to do the tussock loop and because we would have had to have done most of the trees loop again we called it a day. The ride really was awesome. Trees advanced just does not let up, for 53kms! Over 1200 riders. Weather was mint and the track was pretty dry, but mostly not too dusty. Probably the South Island's premier trail ride, although last weeks ride at Motanou was up there.

1216 riders they said on their page

It'd be a big job but it might be worth them making it a two day so people could ride all the loops, we didn't really struggle on the parts of the Tree loop we did, we would just take too long and my fitness wasn't up to that much of that type of riding for that long as it just went on and on, even the steeper climbs had plenty of traction, I think I was stopped on two of them when I lost the rear on tree roots but wasn't hard to get going again and the rider I was with went down on an angled log between two tree sections as did a few other when we were there, had to wait for tracks to clear in a couple of spots to get a decent run

With the part of the tree's loop and the intermediate loop we were packing up about 2.30

The first part of the loop winding along and crossing the river multiple times was pretty good and more what I'd enjoy

Did you see the video of a guy who got taken out by a deer ?

Totally agree, 2 days would be excellent. Trees one day, Tussock the next. Yes, damn deer! I was riding McDonald Downs a few years ago and looked down to see some wild piglets running alongside the bike! Was a bit concerned their mum was going to turn up!

Totara park in the other Hutt from me.

Always a bit shambolic being a Granty ride, but bless him for running then.

Had a great day. Did 3 loops. Just my level, I can't do A sections anymore, or maybe just yet, not sure
Touching the people who were surprised to see me there.

Having a beer but nursing a sprained thumb when I came off down a hill with some ruts and I slipped into one like a dumbarse. Coordination isn't currently a strong point 😕.
    But still fuckin A.

    Who's the old kunn?
