    Emoto?

What is the general opinion of Emoto in ChCh? I went there last year with funds to buy a bike and the guy was a complete dick and didn't take me seriously so I bought elsewhere. Have since bought thousands of dollars worth of gear from other shop so I guess he missed out on a few sales. Can't speak highly enough of Avon City Suzuki though. And they got a pretty hot chick in there last time I was there buying boots.

One of the guys there has Basil Fawlty customer handling skills but he's an ok turkey if you wanna make a deal and they got some good gear there. +1 for Avon city though.

The guy at Emoto was a complete cock when I went in and asked for a test ride as part of an Aprilia promotion advertised online involving that dealership.

Its always felt to me like a sideline to a business that actually pays for everything: a hobby really but tax deductible.

I wasn't expecting a test ride on an RSV4, but they had a nice little 125cc 2 smoker that the cunt wouldn't even let me ride. He basically said that if I wanted to test ride anything then I have to be prepared to buy that particular bike straight after the ride. What if I don't like the riding position, or if the bike just doesn't "feel" right for me?

I've never heard that one from a car dealer before.

At which point you go yeah, sure. Why the hell would you even say anything different? Stuff an RSV4 into a hedge and it's still only a grand excess anyway.

I said I was keen to purchase, but he was trying to do everything to convince me NOT to buy a bike from him.

In fairness, and with a few notable exceptions, there are a LOT of motorcycle shops that operate this business "model".

In fact when I was your age, I had duch a bad experience at Crapsblots I vowed never to go back. Guess what? never been back. thats nearly 30 years. Not that I carry a grudge.

When I was looking for a new car last year (and when I say new car I mean brand new) I went into Avon Shitty Ford with a view to taking a test ride. I got treated like a snotty teenager trying to take one of their FPV's for a fang. Actually not true: I was ignored by every person in the place. One of the sales drones was leaning over a balcony, texting, glanced up at me, and kept going. Oddly, I went to another dealer and purchased a new vehicle.

I emailed the dealer principal later and got a "Oh dear, sorry about that" because I thought they deserved to know how much like a 1970's public service office it was.

It is not difficult: greet everyone who walks in the door in a friendly manner, ask them if you can help them: be friendly but not pushy. take them seriously even if you dont think they have any money. The rough ones likely have just got off a five month trip on the fishing boat they own and have $100k in their pockets....

anyway, bit OT. and like I say, I don't carry grudges for longer than say fifty years.

Well, it must be something you do, or something you give off subconciously... perhaps in your mannerisms, the way you speak, the clothes you wear?

When I walk into a bike shop, and take an interest in a bike, they ask me if I want to test ride it.

I have another friend who is the same as you, and I won't speak ill of a friend, same result as you. But bikes are delicate, so unlike a car the salesman needs to do a little more to protect the interests of the business. Whether that is right or wrong, that's for you to decide, although I will say I've purchased vehicles I was previously indifferent towards, after a test ride. In contrast, I didn't even bother riding the blade, I just said get me one (actually I was happy with the one on the floor, but they insisted on having one still in a crate sent down, which was a nice touch, cheers Hamptons )

Same here. If Hamptons or Avon City Suzuki were Ducati dealers, I'd already have an 1199. As it is, I don't want a brand that I can't (read won't) have (dealer) serviced in Christchurch.

On the flip side, Avon City Ford tried quite hard to sell us a vehicle earlier this year, and probably would have if the wife had been happy driving a Falcon (turns out she has more taste than that, fortunately).
