Yamaha RD parts?

Hello everyone, I've been trying to scrounge up parts for the Yamaha RD series. In particular I'm looking for exhausts and engine parts (cylinders, heads, whole engines etc). Called up most of the bike wreckers I could find in Auckland and there's not a whole lot around except for frame related bits and pieces. Anyone got an old bust RD they want to sell me or could you point me in the direction of parts? Got any old 350 cylinders and heads lying around? Tail fairings? An engine from a 400? Anything?

Try Boyles (04-384 6824) in wgtn, they used to have a bunch of stuff & weren't advertising it. But heck that was years ago.

Have to be careful with conversions & oil pumps gearign etc. Look at the aircooled RD forum.

Ah yeah I'm after Aircooled RD bits and pieces - that 350 engine would be pretty sweet otherwise. F5 Dave, I'll call up Boyles this week It's a pity shipping from the UK/USA is so expensive, getting a tail fairing shipped from the UK costs more than the fairing itself Not to mention the cost of shipping heavier things like cylinders...

You tried Youshop? look on NZ post site. It gets shipped to NZpost in UK or US with your name on it (you pay seller local postage) & Youshop tell you its arrived & will cost $x to ship to you. You can get them to sit on it & combine shipments from other sellers for a discounted rate. Tried it & works well in cases where shipping is prohibitive (ie seller has used a onesizefitsall online calculator for FedEx) or they won't ship international.

That's awesome, I never knew they offered that service. It'd make shipping quite a bit cheaper on some things... Will look into it

Awesome! I'm really keen to find a 350 top end, from what I've researched a 350 top end will be pretty much bolt on fit with re-jetting The only other thing that might need to be replaced is the primary crank gear (I think the 350's have 2 teeth more?)

But check the oil pump gearing as a result matches. Personally if it works and you're running decent oil I think you'll be fine as oil has improved.

I'm currently just running Castrol Activ Mineral in the thing. I found that my RG ran quite a lot better with the TTS Synthetic so I always ran it on that, but I'm not sure about running synthetic in the RD. The guy I bought it off recommended I stick with mineral as it apparently protects the engine a bit better and that's what the bikes were designed to run. I'm not sure though, synthetic is thinner so you'd expect it to lubricate better and it smokes a lot with the mineral, which probably means more of a build up of carbon and oil and crap in my exhausts (my exhausts are dripping oil, by the way). Do you think I'd have any issues running synthetic? Been thinking of bleeding the oil pump and trying it on synthetic for the past couple of weeks, but I still have a pretty much full tank of mineral in there... Going to give Boyles a call today to see if they have any RD bits and bobs lying around

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if pump adjusted ok. Min will be ok. On my RZ I'd shimmed the pump back a bit and ran synthetic, but only a bit. The pump will put in a set amount, but if the bike is over rich the mixture won't be burnt as well and the sponge will flow.

Cool, good to know. Called up Boyles and they didn't have much in the way of parts, they told me to call a fellow named Murray at Seal Imports (I think that was his name? terrible memory sometimes). Had a chat to him and he reckoned doing a 350 conversion was more hassle than it's worth. I'll still consider doing it if I can find some heads and barrels in New Zealand. It's just a bit costly to ship them from overseas. For now I've settled on just working with what I've got... Been looking for some carbs that I can modify with the Dave F carb mod, too (linked to below). Again, no one in Auckland seems to have any lying around, but I found a pair on eBay for pretty cheap that I think I'll grab, might even use the YouShop service for em I was offered some 34mm Mikuni's but I'm not sure they'd run in a stock RD... would be more hassle than it's worth I think.

Ahh yes Murray, he works about 2k away from here, used to work for them. Good guy, bit manic, but I'd trust what he says. He even converted a Suzuki with a Yam top end he used to commute on. All slightly mad.

34s on a stock engine won't yield any more power & will be a beitch to fit into std airbox etc.
