Yes that's where the disconnect started, when shops stopped doing wof. Don't know how much it costs for them to be certified etc but that was a reason to visit the shop at least twice a year instead of buying stuff online...
Our local testing stations were bit over the top when they took over from local shops but after some discussion with bike shops they reached a happy medium.
Bikers working at both our local places, one of the guys even rides a nice classic bike.
Bike usually flies through but then
I have high standards for my own safety, only complaint is how they have to fiddle with standard car headlights from time to time in a random manner...
Why dont you carry at least the basic spanners?

I got a fresh new VTNZ WOF yesterday.
Good luck finding a bike shop in CHCH that does WOF's on a Saturday. Can't think of one that does them period off the top of my head. I suspect Rolling Thunder still do as otherwise who gives all those noisy HD's a WOF?
I prefer Gloucester Motors but he not open Sat morning and I could not see me getting time off work in the next week (sorry mate).
Two other bikes were there and they both usually use VTNZ - one was louder than mine so I figured I was OK and was. There was a heart in mouth moment as they lifted the bike on the side stand and it took a forward dive .............. I'll insist on doing that part in the future regardless of where I go.
It did make me wonder - I presume they have business insurance to cover any damage they may do to a vehicle while 'testing' it......
I take my bikes to VTNZ in Pukekohe and have done for years.
I've been knocked back once for an incorrectly adjusted head light which I then used my own tools to readjust it on the spot.
Of course I do my own warrant checks before heading over there and I wouldn't turn up knowing something wasn't up to scratch.
Getting shitty with the inspector because you can't even maintain your own chain is a bit bloody rich.
So called bikers,,,,,,,,fuck me![]()
I use whoever is convenient for WOF checks for my own bike...when I'm in the mood to be lawful and actually have a WOF.
I maintain my own bike, so I know what it needs and don't care what the inspector fails to see.
My wife's bike goes to a shop. I don't spend enough time on it to know how it's working, so a shop I trust is employed to tell me.

Fucking WOF's what a joke.
If you think VTNZ know nothing about bikes try taking a vintage vehicle to them.
I have had several stand up rows with them over the years because basically all they know about is the current regulations, there is no was a 90 year old vintage car could come close to meeting their standards.
Basically they have to fail 10-20% of all vehicles, if you are the unlucky 8th victum your number is up and you are fucked.
Just another leather clad Tinkerbell.
The Wanker on the Fucking Harley is going for a ride!
A certain Kawasaki dealer in Christchurch left my GSXR idling for an excessive period of time on a hot day during a WOF, and when I pointed out that the bike was pissing out coolant all over the place he said "It's not my problem", and continued to leave the bike idling. That "who cares" attitude means that I will never go back to them. The young guy in the workshop sympathized though, and he let me add a bit of coolant to the bike afterward before I left.
I wouldn't go to VTNZ since when I had a CBR250 the guy nearly dropped it when he revved the shit out of it and dumped the clutch causing the back wheel to spin in the workshop, then he panicked and locked the front wheel nearly dropping it for the second time. I have now found a reputable WOF place (they do pink and green sticker removals so they can't be that dodgy) where the guy actually knows how to ride properly and treats my bike with extra care.
Used to be about $250 to get a WOF certification, and it's a joke seeing the annual cert renewal being donebloody inspector literally tells & points out what has to be checked
a signature & date on the certificate and away they go
And not many bikeshops do or did their own WOF checksknow quite a few who'd just say they did but actually would just ride the bike down to the testing station get it checked & if anything needed doing take it back to shop do what was required then take it back for a retest

They've told me they do, when I've asked.
I'm not too fussed for the CB900, it's a pretty regular bike, but the GSA is expensive and massive, ABS, linked brakes, traction control, a lot going on if you don't know what you're doing. Luckily the fella was a tiny asian bloke and asked me to do the brake test as there was no way he'd be able to handle the bike.
