haha I maintain the vehicles at the place I currently work at. I check tyre pressures, fill them with gas, change wipers, chain tensions etc. It doesn't actually say that it needs to be in the motor vehicle industry. Shit that'll be funny if you got in on a technicality.

Yeah, failed my WOF a few days ago as I had no pillion footpegs... which I took off 4 years ago when I got the bike and have had a bunch of warrants since then, some by the same shop.

The real special part for the observant readers is you can't even carry a fucking pillion on my restricted licence

Yes I understand that, not disputing the law... I was illustrating the point that shops don't always check very carefully because I got through multiple WOFs without pillion footpegs before they brought me up on it.

Why would you get the bike shop to service but not warrant your bike.

Anyone who takes a bike to VTNZ for a warrant is a moron.

I asked the bike shop who they used they told me about a local guy who has a garage an easy walk from my house and I have mostly used him since. He has a good attitude, he won't pass shonky stuff but he won't stuff you about with trivia either. For marginal things like overly loud pipes it comes down to attitude: his and yours.

Last warrant I took the bike to the garage I use for the car (this guy is something of a Subaru specialist) I didn't like the way they did the WoF and they were banging on about a loose chain. The bike shop had just days before fitted a new rear tyre so I was a bit surprised at this. Took the bike home and measured the chain and it was milimetre perfect. The range is 40 to 50mm and it was set at 45mm which is exactly what I would have done myself. Guess I'll be going back to the usual guy next time.

Your mistake was going there during chain week,next week I hear it will be lever week and they are failing bikes without the right coloured tassels on their levers

Shot Mrs Berg's bike into VTNZ for a WOF today as normal (use them as I get discount for Ulysses membership) and all went good. No waiting, no issues with bike. Only problem is they failed to post date the WOF the 7 days we had left. No issues, quick phonecall once we realized and it was sorted.

I like to ride a safe bike so I take my bikes to people I trust ... that can be a shop or VTNZ

In the past that has been VTNZ .... and I knew an excellent tester whom I trusted ..

I have also used bike shops - and found they vary from hopeless (handing warrants for wrecks) to extremely good.

Currently I use a bike shop in preference to the local VTNZ ... but in other places I have used VTNZ in preference to a shop ...

VTNZ also do it while you wait - bike shops can be a pain and ask for it to be left a while ...

i use vtnz in invercargil for two main reasons, convenience and cost, i normally go in with the bike (both bikes) to put them on the centre stand and assist with the testing, not to worried about what they miss because i check my bikes fairly regularaly, when i took the wing in the guy nearly shit himself, "what am i going to check on this, i cant see anything" was pretty much all he had to say so he checked the tires, bearings, swingarm slop, and all lights then brake tested it when he rode it back round the front for me

I use the bike shop and car shop to repair my vehicles when I cannot (i.e. the very technical issues). VTNZ does all my WOF's cos that's their only role. I had mechanics create work on my bikes just to give them something to do, really pissed me off and cost a fortune for no gain. Using VTNZ as a WOF facility only prevents this BS issue reoccuring.

VTNZ does all my WOF's, and I've only had the minor odd issue, but nothing that was stupid or other. They do a great job and have always been happy to explain any issues I bring up with their findings. They have a full complaints process anyone can use should you see the need. Where people have issues do try using their complaint process as opposed to just venting via a forum where they cannot represent themselves, it keeps everything balanced and fair to both parties.

I see MTA has just sold 60% shareholding in VTNZ german company that specialises in vehicle saftey checks. So here on in, no doubt we will see some interesting changes ahead.
