    Exhaust modifications, LAMS approved?

    I am looking at getting a VTR250. Im considering puting an aftermarket pipe on it, not unlike what this guy has done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULM4i14UMNg. The stock pipe just seems like a waste of v-twin engine. Only problem is I cant quite work out whether this makes a bike "non LAMS compliant". Obviously the performance benefits of after market exhausts are negligible at best, but do the legislators agree? What is the deal with insurance etc when getting these modifications done?

    250 and less are automatically allowed, regardless of modification (Last time I looked at the rules anyway).

    In terms of insurance you have to let them know you have one installed. I assume it may or may not bump up your premium.

    I'd considered making up chambers for my smoker, and wondered the same thing. From what I understand, you can. Any bike above 250cc must remain in standard form, but it doesn't explicitly state that 250cc bikes and under must not be modified. The whole power to weight ratio thing is a bit fuzzy too. It states 'fully electric powered motorcycles with a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and under'. I'm not sure if the power/weight ratio thing applies to a 250cc bike. It doesn't seem to explicitly state that. Technically speaking, I think it'd still be legal to chuck chambers on an old Kawasaki 250 Triple, port the cylinders and re-jet the carbs (who would know, anyway).

    Some 250s are not allowed - see NZTA website.

    Also,

    "What if a motorcycle is on the list and has been modified in a way that has increased
    its power-to-weight ratio?
    Any motorcycle that has been modified to increase its power-to-weight ratio is no longer
    LAMS-complaint and must not be ridden on a learner or restricted motorcycle licence."

    I wouldn't change anything from stock. You might get away with it until your insurance company starts to fuck with you.
