On a good day, one of the best rides, Mt Messenger/the coast between Mokau and Awakino/ the Awakino gorge...

Have done it the pissing rain and still had a blast.

Being a local to NP we regularly take this route. An easy ride on most bikes. I've done it on sports bikes, touring, sports touring and now a cruiser. On a cruiser ya tend to have to take your time a bit more to stop constant touch downs in places on Mt messenger and the gorge.

I punt a massive long and low Kawa VN 2000 two up with out much fuss. Good trip out an about, great scenery and plenty places to park up and enjoy the view. Ya can stop at Mokau or Piopio for a cuppa. Mt Messenger and the gorge makes for good riding.

Thanks gents, sounds good, just wasn't sure whether it was even sealed.

While we're at it: accommodation in Te Kuiti? (good clean motel or camping ground cabins).

Nice riding roads. Pick a good day though for max fun, though it is still really cool in the pissing rain. Mt Messenger is cool! Really tight stuff. Just DO IT! I love that bit of road. I wish it was my back yard road.

There's a pretty cool route up to Marakopa. There is a stretch (11km-ish) unsealed but I have done it twice on sporties without a bother. About 30km of (sealed) twisties IIRC.

Mind you, the Awakino gorge is pretty awesome as well. I loved Mt Messenger last time I rode it.

It's not so far from my back yard. Besides, if all goes to plan it'll be the test ride after Mr Taylor tweaks the Buell's forks, and even ordinary Buells are fun in tight stuff.

Haven't stayed in town it self. However did stay at the Panorama a few moons back. It's on the way into Te Kuiti coming down the hill into town on the right. It's real plain jane stuff, but at least your bike is out of sight which is important.

The other one we stayed at a while back was the Waitomo lodge motel, seemed ok. Not sure if you could 'hide' your bike away though eh. may pay to ask.

Te Kuiti may have reasonable motels, but forget the camping ground bit.

Or make sure you get a ground floor unit, and sneak it in after dark. Haha

I picked up a battery operated alarm with a movement sensor.
Has a plastic coated steel braided wire that will scream if cut. I put it outa sight somewhere for the casual passer by.
Fits in ya pocket.
I will have a look and put up a link.

Marvelous road (quite literally, my back yard) sealed all the way. Two fuel stops, two Cafes. Heavily policed at times and quite busy Truckwise, in the week but generally great riding

Ten minutes North of Te Kuiti, Right on the corner of the Waitomo turn-off is an Ostrich farm B+B. Nice place and the owner is a biker so I'm sure he'd stick your bike somewhere safe and warm.

Great road. Its a little boring from NP to a bit before Mt Messenger but then its just brilliant. Scenic, good roads, Mt Messenger is a blast and the gorge is a nice ride too. Did it on a little 250 cruiser and it was a hoot.
