(Yet another) Bike Transport Thread

Has anyone had a bike recently transported from upper NI to lower SI for an unbelievably cheap price?

I'm looking to get a bike from Dargville/Whangerei to Dunedin. It's a runner but mostly a project bike under $1000. So I'm happy to use a freight/furniture company since their default $1500 insurance is enough if they trash it and since most specialist bike transport companies would cost more than the bike itself.

The other option is to find someone here who routinely travels between Dargville/Whangerei and Auckland with a trailer/small truck, and see if they can bring the bike to Auckland for some cold brewskies.

Obviously the transport options between Auckland to Christchurch are going to be much better than from the tip of NI to the bottom of SI.

Anyone have any experience with something similar recently?

I had a bike transported from Dargville to Blenheim
by Biketranz cost $375 .. took 3 weeks , as had to
wait for enough bikes going south to make it worth
there while crossing the ditch...
But the bottom of the south island could be getting
up there prise wise...

biketrans Ashburton to Auckland $480 recently.

I bought a lathe bit of TM from ChCh to Ak and Mana wanted to charge me $380, when I said thats over the top, they said it was" the minimum charge.
Mainfreight who are really nice to deal with have a web service that works great, ChCh door to Ak depot $118 ( inc insurance). took about 4 days.
Might be worth giving them a call as I have seen ( dirt) bikes at their depot

Thanks for the tip man. Gave them a call. $700 from Whangerei to Dunedin!!!1111!!!! Obviously more if they have to do a pickup from Dargville. I'm guessing Akl-Chch is vastly cheaper thanks to being such a common route.

Time to find someone living there who drives down to Auckland regularly.

Biketranz, wanganui-dunedin $450.
most furniture companies wnt take complete (or near complete) bikes themselves, they contract those items out to specialist contractors like biketranz etc.

If its a cheap heap of shit and it doesnt matter if it gets banged up a bit, ring around for quotes and take the cheapest, biketranz tend to cost a little more, but also have a better reputation, which has been earned.

Strap it real good onto a standard size shipping/Chep pallet and take it to your local Main Freight.

The better the pallet the better it will travel.

That's about as cheap as you'll get it and they look after stuff pretty well.

If you do use a cheap carrier or even an expensive one for that matter be sure to read the fine print.
What you call default insurance of $1500 id actually carriers limited liability. On the consignment note there will be a little box with "at owners risk" on it that will often get ticked on cheapo jobs like this or where stuff is transported without protection or proper shipping crate etc.
And then there's the blood out of a stone process of getting payment and in a trip like this there is likely to be subcontractors/freight forwarders involved.
Toll have a yard in whangerei so rail could probably be a cheap option...
An example of a run I used to do out of Auckland, the freight forwarder was supposed to provide me with a forklift driver and/or helper to load. I used to load myself a lot anyway and didn't want to wait around all night for the helper to not happen anyway... If we damaged anything they would try claim against us but my boss would never pay as the contract stated they were supposed to load anyway.
Cheap is not always the best option...

jump on google and get quotes, surprising how easy it is and not always as expensive as you would think (not always as cheap either) but no harm in spending a few mins and send some emails.

Definitely look to get it picked up from Whangarei. Dargaville's a pain in the arse.

Continuing the transport saga, which I'm very close to finalising, can someone point me towards a decent Dargaville member who can accept the delivery of a bike on Tuesday/Wednesday for the freight company to pick up on Wednesday.

Ask the freight companies which places they normally go to on their run. You'll probably be able to have it left at one of their regular clients places if you ask nicely or include a dozen.
