    Wannabe '98-'99 GSX-R750 SRAD owner

    HI there,

I'm just getting back into motorcycling after a 6 year hiatus & are pretty keen on an injected GSX-R750 SRAD from '98 or '99. If you have owned one of these bikes in the past; is there anything particular to that model I should be looking out for when shopping for one?

Even better, If anybody knows of a buyer's guide somewhere a link would be much appreciated

Also, the SRAD's seem pretty rare now & the ones I have seen all seem to have been dropped or raced / thrashed. Do we ever see immaculate examples turn up locally any more? I see really nice ones can still be found in Aus & the UK so hopefully there are still some left here!

    Thanks

Price-wise they are a tough call. Brilliant, do anything, even mental, bikes BUT they are 15 years old now.
I just sold my '99 for 5, and it took 4 months. No-one seemed interested until one guy flashed the cash.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Yes I've been to see that one and I was tempted but it is not so much unmolested as nicely restored. The gent bought it as a fresh import last year & it had been in a spill so has had some replacement bodywork, repaint, new stickers etc. It also will need a rego & the pillion seat is missing.

He's done a nice job but it was the first one I looked at & considering what (other bikes) can be had for that sort of money... just not 100% about it.

Having owned both, I'd recommend getting a 96-97 carbed version. The fuel injection on the 98-99 SRAD is horrid under snapped shut throttle and braking. This was sorted from 2000 onward with the introduction of dual butterfly injection. (I think). The issue wasn't as noticeable on the TLs because they had a slipper clutch.

    Oops - I see a double-post up there

Interesting you should say that about the pre-injected models, I was avoiding them because they had a reputation of being harder to ride & not good for noobs. It's good to hear from somebody who has actually ridden both.

Did those ones come out with an improved CCT over the earlier ones?

It sounds like a CCT issue you're having more than anything else, unless of course your one has been replaced already or is an updated version. These bikes are notorious for having a shitty CCT from factory that becomes noisy at a very low mileage on some examples. It's a cheap fix though, and a manual CCT off eBay is the way to go.

The link ratio curve on the S-Rad is truly HORRID. It gets its way into about one third of its stroke and from thereon in it moves the shock shaft so far and therefore so fast for any given rear axle movement that its almost in a state of semi hydraulic lock. This is the very first thing to address with this model
