    Licencing and registering a home-built bike?

    Hey there Guys,

    Pretty new to the Motorcycle scene, was getting a little sick of cars
    and saw a way our with trying two wheels?

    Although, I'm very picky with the style of bike I like,
    therefore I would love to design and build my own bike?

    Now that is all well and good, will probably start a build soon and keep
    you all updated, BUT.

    Is it even possible to get a custom made bike from scratch on NZ roads? (Vinning and Rego)
    Will this be a massive costly and lengthy process? Please help!

    Yes and yes. Make sure you know the legal requirements to get it on the roads before you start, or at least under the supervision of someone who knows what they're doing as you could find that you have to do substantial mods to it before it can be made legal.

    You really are better off buying a bike to be honest.

    imho it would be much easier starting with a registered bike, even if it is little more than a frame, as you should only need to certify the work, rather than struggling through vinning, emissions, etc.

    What would be really cool would be to start with a reasonably big frame (like a Hayabusa), and then put a turbine engine in it...

    Call a certifier or two man and have a chat. They'll tell you straight up and are the people you need to be listening to as they tick it all off for you.

    I think as suggested you are better to start with a frame from my understanding, you don't see a lot of rods rocking around that are scratch builds, but anything can be done with a dedicated cheque book.

    buy a rego'ed bike with the motor yer want... put it on hold till the build is finished...
    then use the motor & steering head... just don't weld/ cut/ grind over the numbers on the head...
